How should I rate this hotel.. besides being situated in the heart of Kolkata (on the congested and overcrowded Sudder street) where you may get almost all the things of your requirements nearby, nothing impressed me. Reception is in a differed building, the rooms are in other (no direction mark, I had to ask a few hotel personnel the way to room). Even after entering the building it was a task to find out the room. It seems to be an old residential building subsequently converted to a hotel.

Rooms are small and view outside (practically no view outside) is of some old construction only. Bathroom and quality of toileteris however were acceptable. Food was ok and staff behaviour satisfactory.

Will I ever be interested in coming again ... certainly not.

GOOD and moderately priced good hotels are in short supply in Central Kolkata. This one is a good choice except for the attitude of the management. I had an issue with NO hot water in the shower. They said they fixed it and "it would take some time". Two days went by and there was still no hot water. After giving up with the hotel staff in trying to remedy this issue, I contacted the agent through whom I booked the hotel. The discussion went in circles -- agent/hotel/yours truly -- the hotel staff stating that I did have hot water in the room which was NOT true.

The breakfast is good. The wi-fi is needlessly difficult to connect to. The rooms are immaculately clean. The service staff whom I encountered were all very pleasant and helpful. Unfortunately I cannot recommend this hotel because of my unresolved issue. Making water hot isn't rocket science, and they should have a mechanical engineer on staff who can remedy this kind of problem. The management's attitude is what really put me off.

I took refuge at the Lytton after a poor experience at a nearby hotel and was very pleased with the hotel and my room overlooking Scudder St. and particularly with the welcoming, helpful staff. In fact, many of the staff I encountered at the hotel & restaurant within had worked at the hotel for upwards for 15 to 20 years. Everyone, including Ms. Martin at the front desk seemed pleasant & very eager to assist. A fellow named Ali even accompanied me after dark to an ATM & when that one failed to function, stayed with me till I found another that did work. The restaurant is not really out of the ordinary but again the staff was most cheerful and the included breakfast buffet, much better than expected. For the price, the Lytton is clean, well-located and a nicely comforting mid-point between budget and expense account hotels in Calcutta.

Room Tip: If interested in observing life on the street, the street-facing rooms are great and yet still quiet.

We stayed in this hotel for two nights. It's an old hotel . The food is excellent and staff is very helpful . The rooms are really big and clean but not modern . The new market is walking distance from the hotel . You can find lots of foreigners in this hotel . It is actually a business travellers hotel and located on a busy road. Overall a nice hotel with good parking facilities

Room Tip: Take room away from road site to have a quiet sleep

I stayed at the hotel for 3 nights. The entry is through crowded bylanes and into a place that does not give the feel of a high quality hotel. The room alloted was in the adjoining buliding as it is spread over 2 bldgs. The reception and restaurants in one and the living accomodation in the other. The room was nice and clean. So was the bathroom, although you had to leave the tap on for 10 mins or more to get warm water (reception advised me to do that- what a waste!!!). No central ac- individual units which the housekeeping leave on even if you are not in the room all day. The service for an iron or other things you ask for is quick.

The restaurant is quite dingy though the food, particularly the breakfast was good and had the requisite variety - fruits, juice, north indian, south indian, continental and some chinese too. Cant say about the hygeine part bec i saw a shabby looking fellow carrying milk in a vessel in the open without any cover towards the restaurant :-P.

Although the rates are on the higher side they neither have a pool nor a gym or a fitness center (not even a few dumbells in a corridor :-D). They provide free wi-fi via a card which is a tad tedious.

Why didnt i go to another hotel? The IPL semi finals and finals were on so no room in any of the better hotels. For that price i would advise going elsewhere.
