The hotel is centrally located on a grubby street, but once inside the gates you are a world away from the hustle and bustle of Kolkata. The staff were very pleasant and helpful and the room was very nice and of a western style, complete with tea and coffee-making facilities and sitting area. The bathroom was spacious and clean, with lots of shampoo etc and towels. The hotel is ideally situated for exploring Kolkata on foot but if you prefer there are always plenty of taxis and rickshaws around. The restaurant was excellent for both breakfast and dinner, with a very wide choice of food, well-prepared and served. Free wifi is available and there is a business centre on the premises where you can access the internet free of charge.

Stayed here 19. Nights so feel I have a balanced view of it. Location excellent for central Kolkotta, you can walk to a lot and taxis wait outside. Sudden street is a full on Indian experience, noisy, a bit grubby, but smiling faces everywhere and the staff at Lytton are long time staff who enjoy their work. They couldn't have been nicer. If tipping is a problem, do it at the end of your stay otherwise someone will be at your door with great regularity. Breakfasts good, we asked for eggs freshly cooked and toast freshly done, always given with a smile.
Hot water and plenty of it in the shower, can change money at reception and free wifi, we were the only hotel in the locality to have it and a free business centre computer too. Some English tv channels.

Room Tip: Ask for one overlooking the courtyard, not the street, they are a bit smoke smelling and noisy.

Admittedly I was in the mood to be pleased having had a fairly disastrous experience at my previous hotel - it was being renovated but noone had thought to inform me of that when I booked. At the Lytton I was welcomed warmly and fortunately there was a vacancy as someone had cancelled. I am not surprised they are usually full. I was slightly unwell while I was there and the staff could not have been more helpful. The rooms are old fashioned, large and immaculately clean. I guess the building and decor is 1930's and it is wonderful and has not been updated thank goodness. The location is excellent. I have rarely stayed anywhere so consistently good.

Room Tip: If you are noise sensitive ask for a room not facing the street.

I had stayed in this hotel for one of my business trips in Oct '11. I was trying to book a hotel in one of the regular hotel i usually stay but due to peak season in Kolkata, was unable to get a booking anywhere. Finally, after extensive search, i booked into this hotel primarily because of the location in much famous Sudder street & close to my work place. It is a street which is widely visited by lot of foreigners and you will find the same in the hotel also. The interiors are not that modern with all the amenities, but it is a classic style hotel which will give you a feel of Old Kolkata. Service is excellent and very personalised upto your needs. Buffet breakfast is basic & needs improvement, the restaurant is dark & dingy & need a serious renovation. All in all, an average hotel to stay in.

Room Tip: Do not take room facing the sudder street as it has a lot of noise from outside
