Stayed from 8-10 March 2013. Hotel is a grand old survivor which is maintained to a very high standard and is a tranquil retreat from the bustle of Kolkata. From reception to check-out, the level of service was of the highest standard. Our room was large and excellently equipped with a comfortable mattress and large pillows. The public areas are well maintained and in keeping with the period ambience. The staff are some of the most courteous and efficient we have encountered anywhere and we travel a lot. Nothing was too much trouble. We tend not to eat in hotels but the standard of the kitchen at the Oberoi was very high and we sampled excellent Bengali dishes. The chef was so pleased with our comments that he invited us to share some of his secrets in the kitchen - a wonderful experience. The breakfast buffet was imaginative and included many local dishes as well as a choice of dishes cooked to order. This is one of the best hotels we have stayed in and we have travelled to over 100 countries. If I can find a criticism and it is difficult, it is that the hotel's bar is a little soulless. We will certainly return.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the inner courtyard. It will overlook the pool but it is very quiet.

Dear Trip Advisor Member,

It was a pleasure to have you stay at The Oberoi Grand Kolkata recently. Thank you for taking the time to review us on Trip Advisor.

Both our restaurants, La Terrace and Baan Thai, are acclaimed in the city for the quality of food and service. Your words of appreciation for shall go a long way to motivate the team to continue to deliver a high level of service to our valued guests.

I have noted your feedback regarding the atmosphere of the Bar. Chowringhee Bar is a colonial style Bar and is known for its fine selection of Single Malts, cigars and cocktails along with live jazz music played every evening by India’s legendary bebop Jazz guitarist Carlton Kito. We will certainly review your feedback about redecoration whenever we renovate the bar.

I am delighted to note that you have had an enjoyable stay and it was a pleasure to have you stay been of service to you.

Thank you for having stayed with us and we look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you back to The Oberoi Grand and Kolkata.

"In Calcutta?" everyone asked. "You've got to stay at the Oberoi." And what good advice was that. This extraordinary building enfolds its guests in its palm-filled courtyard with a blanket of good fare and kind service. For the uninitiated, the sights of the city can still be gruelling, 40 years after Mother Theresa was most needed, and this is a haven for both the body and the spirit.

Dear Trip Advisor Member,

The Oberoi Grand is referred to as the “Grand Dame of Kolkata” which depicts the old world charm and the Victorian culture and the hotel in its setting is indeed intimate. Our pool side rooms have a great view of the swimming pool which has often been termed as an “oasis” by most of the guest. We are delighted to know that you have considered us as your haven in Kolkata.
Thank you for having stayed with us and we look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you back to The Oberoi Grand and Kolkata.

The Oberoi is the cool, calm place to stay in the midst of Kolkata: space, service and comfort where perhaps you least expect it. Ask for a room overlooking the inside garden and pool. The rooms are as to be expected in a heritage building, completely clean with excellent levels of decor and modern bathrooms. The service is exemplary: all the hotel staff keen to establish that each guest has everything wanted. The ultimate test of hotels is support when things go wrong, and when some luggage went astray, the Oberoi front office took full charge and recovered it for us calmly and quickly, with the help of the hotel’s Airport Representative and two drivers - an impressive performance including much concern for our personal position and keeping us informed. A reminder that hotels are people, with genuine charm of manner something quite different from “customer service” by corporate rule.

Room Tip: ask for an inside room overlooking the pool, 3rd floor or above

The Oberoi Grand is a "Grand Hotel" in every respect: elegant lobby (eventhough you wouldn't suspect it as you near the hotel from the streetside), stylish innercourt with pleasant pool, the colonial details, large rooms with high ceilings. And...excellent service. We asked the staff where we could get the best tea and they managed to steer us clear of the traditional tourist traps and made us go to a very popular local place (judging from the huge lines of waiting locals) where we bought excellent tea. When we arrived, we were disappointed about one thing: the room smelled very moldy. The room was located at the outside of the hotel, facing the street. The windows couldn't be opened (which seems the best way to go to prevent the oppressive heat and carfumes from penetrating your room, but it did result in a very unpleasant smell. The staff was very helpful in showing us other rooms and finally we got a room with a balcony on the inside, that was very comfortable and light (we don't know if by doing so we got an upgrade, but if so, we would strongly recommend to do so). The lady showing us the rooms also kindly offered us, free of charge, some local sweets, that we savoured on our balcony. All in all, we were very satisfied about our stay. Special mention must be made about the buffet breakfast: usually quite a problem in India if you enjoy a western breakfast. But this breakfast was one of the best we had in India of all our travels there.

Room Tip: The rooms on the interios of the hotel, with doors leading to the balcony, are more pleasant, becaus...

Dear Trip Advisor Member,

It was a pleasure to have you stay at The Oberoi Grand Kolkata. Thank you for taking the time to review us on Trip Advisor.

My team and I are delighted to know that you enjoyed your stay.

I am concerned to note your feedback regarding moldy smell in the room which was initially allotted to you. Our Housekeeping team ensures that the rooms are very well ventilated and maintained especially since they have carpets and wooden furniture. I have shared your feedback with the team. I am pleased to know that you were assisted by the team and with another room and the rest of your stay was comfortable. Our city facing rooms are actually popular as well.

Thank you for your encouraging feedback regarding the breakfast served at La Terasse and the service of the team.

We look forward to the opportunity of welcoming you back on your return visit to Kolkata.

THE OBEROI GRAND KOLKUTTA
We have travelled all over India during the past 30 years and Calcutta is a city you really must visit. However as most people know - arriving in this city is like being punched in the face - there are not many cities like Calcutta. Although expensive I would stay in the Oberoi Grand. The reason being is that this hotel is a total escape from the mad, frenzy that pervades this city. If you stay budget - as we have done in the past - you will have no respite from the honking horns, stuffy heat and mad traffic. Stay two nights and spend a couple of days exploring this amazing city - then escape to the haven of the Oberoi. The staff are the best I have ever met and the food is really great. The Taj is also great but I prefer the old world colonial style of the Oberoi which fits well into it's surroundings. Very well designed and great location. There are a few detracting points such as the Internet which is far too expensive and some of the mini bar prices - but this is true of many hotels that we have stayed in across India. Stay here and you will enjoy it !

I was treated like Royalty at this Grand Hotel. It is one of, if not the best Hotel I have stayed. Everything about the Oberoi Grand is outstanding..The Restaurant caters for every taste and the Tenderloin steak is tremendous. My mouth waters when I think of it. The room service is excellent and the western style breakfast in your room leaves me fully ready to start a working day.

Room Tip: I don't think any room would be bad in this establishment.
