Rossa Guest House
Reviewed January 6, 2013

Stayed here for about three nights. It is a B&B - a few rooms made available in a house for guests. The place is clean and well maintained. The staff are pretty helpful and provide good service. The food here is tasty but quite expensive - both breakfast as well as dinner. With Raj's assistance, we were able to sample some really good traditional Bengali food nearby. You can walk down to the nearby City Centre mall for lots of amenities. The staff also take your clothes to a same day laundry (not expensive). Some of the issues with this place, if you are seeing sights in the city is accessibility. You end up spending about 500 Rs / day on taxis to & fro. Salt Lake, unlike Kolkata is quiet and safe and all streets are well lit. I think the charges of nearly 2100 Rs. / night for a double bedroom are quite exorbitant, if you add in the food premium and the travel. Having said this, I have no complaints about the cleanliness and service in the place. There is also a 2.5% service charge for using a credit card.

This guest house is clean, quiet, and functional, which is more than can be said for many of Kolkata's guest houses. The manager is not on site, and extended or detailed communication with the on-site staff can be a problem unless one speaks bangla.

The directions are a bit misleading. The house isn't at all "opposite Central Park" - instead it's in the interior of FE block - from Central Park, walk one crossroad east from the main north-south road that runs along the western edge of FE block, then turn south, then turn left at the cement sign. It also isn't close to Bidhan Nagar station; one has to take an auto there, although it is possible to walk on 4th Avenue to the EM Bypass to get a bus.

The neighbourhood, like most of Salt Lake, has no street vendors so for food one has either to walk to City Centre or to rely on the guest house's cooks. The guest house serves breakfast, lunch and dinner although the menu items are overpriced for what they are (e.g. a hundred rupees for an omelette that might cost twenty rupees on the street). The advantage is that it's quiet.

In my room (203), the geyser's plug was loose in the plug point and this resulted in no hot water one morning, till the staff determined what the problem was. In the kitchen, the cups and mugs are kept on the same shelf next to the cook's shampoo and hair comb.

MJ and I stayed here in late November as we were in Kolkata for a friend's wedding. From the moment we called Raj saying we would be arriving and he offered to have a Taxi pick us up. Little did we expect he would be picking us up himself in the middle of the night due to our delayed flight. The place was modest, but clean, and we were comfortable. It's really easy to get into the main city area, though it does take about 30 minutes. Raj and Moumita made us feel like were were staying with family. I will def stay here next time I'm in Kolkata!

My friend and I stayed in a room for 4 days. This is a house is in a residential neighborhood, so it felt like we were visiting a cousin or friend's house, not at a commercial hotel.
The accommodation was basic and modest. The floors and appliances were clean, and staff was there to help if we needed anything. They cooked us breakfast in the mornings.
We were allowed to use the desktop computer in the main office, and having access to it was helpful, especially since I had trouble connecting any Apple devices to wireless.

The best part about staying here was the friendly services personally offered by our hosts. They went out of their way to introduce us to the neighborhood, show us how to use public transportation, get us set up with mobile phones and access to an ATM, and even help me get my phone back when I lost it on a taxi one night! I'm so happy we chose Rossa over a downtown hotel, because the experience was as local and personally accommodating as it can get.

Room Tip: Second floor room next to the kitchen was quiet and spacious with sunlight in the morning.

My mother and I stayed here in October of 2012 during the Durga Puja festival. The neighborhood is very upscale, very safe at night. When out in the city, everyone knew where salt lake city was so it was easy to get home. Host and hostess were very sweet and took great care of us. The place was big, clean and nice. It is a very small guesthouse with only a few rooms which make it quite quaint. The only drawback was that the internet wasn't working while we were there and it is really hard to navigate kolkata without internet.
