“Wonderful experience”
Reviewed January 8, 2014

The boat ride through the water inlets in jungle was never to miss-out. Our boat was gliding slowly and silently to still water pool, bounded by "Bani" tree (as explained by boat man) from two sides and above. The overall experience was so beautiful, that the water pool appeared to us as gateway to haven. Place was close to the jungle in Avatar.

Thanks to Backpackers team. The eco village we stayed in was very well designed. Clean toilets in mud-walled cottage, comfortable bamboo bed, with clean bedsheets and comforters.
If one want to see stars, one should stay there for at-least a night. The sky was so clear, and stars were really twinkling :-) Just Awesome.

The next day we spent entire day in a boat in search of wild animals. Our breakfast and lunch were cooked in the boat itself. We spotted wild dog, variety of birds specially king fishers, wild snakes, lots of deers, and finally crocodile too. We were not luck enough to spot Royal Bengal Tiger. But the over-all experience to fabulous.

“A bang for your buck”
Reviewed January 8, 2014 via mobile

Tooling around Kolkata for the day on bikes (Enfield, Honda) ably handled by our drivers Ayan & Farouk gave us a great look at daily life in the city. Markets, recycling projects with nearby farming, temples, botanical garden, Bengali lunch, ghats plus other tidbits... A pleasure indeed and highly recommended.

“Good value for money - but could do with more organisation”
Reviewed January 6, 2014

Overall our three day-two night stay in the eco village and the tour of the Sundarbans was a good one though quite basic in nature. Given what we were paying, this was in line with our expectations - it was good value for money. We enjoyed specially the day on Elmar when we were taken around the mangrove swamps......though we did not see many animals, it was a relaxing and enjoyable cruise. The food that was served at our meals was wholesome and nourishing and ample in quantity and the rooms were adequate though I thought that a better provision for hot water could have been made.

I also felt that improvements could have been made with the whole organization and briefing for the trip. While our guide Rajesh was infectious in his enthusiasm and certainly very entertaining, he did not have the maturity and understanding to handle a large group of our size. Rather than ad hoc and casual pronouncements, it would be better to have a clear briefing and explanation at the beginning of every day as to how the day would unfold and the approximate timings for the various excursions and events (a recyclable handout would have been even more useful)

This was not forthcoming which led to a lot of confusion and unmet expectations. Such was the case with the lunch on the way back which we were told would be served to us on the bus and did not happen. One cannot expect people to travel for six hours from 9 AM to 3 PM without food and drink of any kind - that omission needs to be rectified immediately otherwise one ends up with a lot of tired, hungry and grumpy passengers which detracts from the overall experience - this is exactly what happened in our case.

“Kolkata by Motorbike - a totally amazing experience”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

Wow. This day-long high-energy back-of-a-motorbike tour around a generous mix of obvious (Victoria Monument & Mother Theresa's Motherhouse) and less obvious (the municipality tip & red light district) Kolkata sights was simply the best introduction to a city I've ever had. On a bike with laid back lovely local bikers, we were plunged in among the buzz, smells, noises and colours but not the traffic jams. Now the back of a motorbike travelling at speed on Kolkata's less than evenly surfaced roads behind someone you've never met before isn't going to be for everyone. And if you want in-depth knowledge about each of the many sights you won't get it - the lads know their stuff but it's more a local's-eye view. But for me it immersed me in Kolkata in a way another tour simply couldn't have done and left me grinning and my senses spinning. Wonderful.

“Sunderbans... A rare experience...”
Reviewed January 1, 2014

We went to Sunderbans during Mid December for a two night/3 days trip. I checked available options on net and found the backpackers tour to be most suitable as it met most of my requirements. I called Rajesh over phone and booked the tour for December 13th. On the designated day, we went to their office at Tottee Lane and in fact reached even before the office had opened. Soon others assembled and we took off around 8.30 AM from there in a Tempo Traveller. There were a total of 12 people, including a couple who were to be picked up from Science City. It was an even mix of 6 Indians and 6 foreign nationals (apparently the tour is more popular among the foreigners). We had Om as our companion and guide. We had packet breakfast consisting of sadwiches and fruits. On the way we stopped at a tea stall, had piping hot tea and also (thankfully) availed of toilet facilities (very basic, but ok), especially for women.
After that we were continuously on the move, reaching Gothkhali, then a boat ride to Gosaba, then a 40 minute rickshaw drive and then again a boat ride to finally reach the resort. The resort is on the bank of a river, quite beautifully constructed and makes you feel part of the natural surroundings.
The village has no electricity so do not expect anything beyond basic facilities. The food was basic but cooked very well and quite tasty. In fact all the foreigners quite loved the food and enjoyed themselves.
We went for a village wacl in the evening and were fortunate to watch a cock fighting competition where people from nearby villages had come over with their cocks. There is no betting involved and the prize for the winning cock's owner is the defeated cock which finds itself served as the main course in dinner!!!
After a refreshing village walk we went for a bird watching trip in two traditional boats. The trip lasted till evening and we saw a lot of birds. FInally as the sun set and it became dark, it was time to return, refresh yourself, have tea and pakoras and settle down to some local musical performance and a nice dinner.
Next day we went for the real thing. Started around 6.30 AM, went to Sajnekhali forest office, took the necessary permission and were away on the real trip.It was a day long trip on the boat with breakfast, lunch and evening snacks served on the boat itself. The forest department also provided a professional guide who is supposed to know the jungle and provide informations.
It was a great trip, moving on the calm waters of the rivers, trying our luck to catch a glimpse of the great illusive Royal Bengal Tiger. Alas! we saw a lot of wildlife, Crocs lazing around on the banks, one swam past our boat also, lots of dear, wild boars, monitor lizards, birds and monkey but no tiger. Finally we returned in the evening, exhausted but quite thrilled by the experience.
Next day we lazed around, had breakfast and as we were waiting for the boat to come around 9.30 AM, we came to know that the vehicle coming from Kolkata (carrying that days tourists and taking us back from Gothkhali) had broken down. They arranged two cars but it delayed our departure by almost 3 hours!!
However, Om immediately asked the caretakers to cook a fast lunch for us and took us on a hastily arranged boat trip to keep us engaged. We finally started around 12. My son had a evening flight from Kolkata and Mowgli who had come with one of the cars, ensured we reached in time with some expert driving.
Overall, a great experience!! Some things could definitely be improved but I would say that these are not important enough. The atmosphere, the nature surrounding you at every step, the beautiful rivers, complete absence of pollution makes it a great gate away.

Finally a word about Om, our friend, philosopher and guide. He was absolutely great, very charming, had answers for every situation, quick to take decisions and looked after us very well, including arranging bear in the evening when all of us forgot to get it on the way over!!!
Thank you Om, Rajesh and Mowgli. I would also like to thank all the staff who were always available, always smiling and helped make the trip interesting.
