Have you realised, more often than not, we know so little about the city we inhabit and seek to learn more about places far & beyond?

Heritage & culture go hand in hand with the chaos and bustle of most of the parts of Kolkata, but if you just stop for a moment and gaze intently at some of the derelict structures you can actually be transported into an era, a Raj gone by. That is exactly what Iftehkar uncovered for us one Sunday morning in his carefully curated "Footsteps of the Raj- Dalhousie square" walk. The walk was not so much about learning something new-we all have gone through our share of history- as it was about putting things in the right perspective: Our own. At many points we halted to have long discussions on different points of views and relevance in today's world, not many seemed to draw a conclusion- but they most certainly added another dimension to what we knew or so far considered sacro sanct! There is much to be un learned& much to be understood and this is an amazing way to start your own journey of discovery. I strongly recommend this for anybody who loves history or loves Kolkata :-)

it all started with an Afremov painting i shared on Facebook where i expressed an ardent love for walking. that was when i heard of Calcutta Walks. A most wonderful teacher suggested that i could actually go for a walking tour. i selected the Shobhabajar trip for a first time experience and it became an experience worth a 50 stereotypical tourist trips put together. i actually became a tourist in my own city and thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it. digging up the past is a most pleasurable experience indeed especially when one is accompanied by an explorer who loves the city to pieces and knows it at the back of his hand. starting from interesting architectural delights to a scrumptious sweet snack of the unique madhuparka in the end, the entire experience was a memorable treat. i would encourage every kolkatan to actually take the opportunity to see what surrounds us instead of merely looking at them for once. - Suchi.

The operator is called either "Calcutta Walks" or "Walks of India" and organises mainly small group tours with a variety of themes. My hubby and I joined a morning tour called "Bringing Goddess to Earth", and arranged an optional hotel pick-up to meet our guide - or "Explorer" - Ritwick and another traveller at a roadside near the flower market. We walked through the narrow path of the colourful and lively market, observed daily activities at river bank Ghat, crossed Howrah Bridge and hopped onto a ferry with other commuters. We had a tea break at a roadside stall, visited a crematorium, then went to Kumartuli where statues of Hindu Gods and Goddesses are made. We did all this in a morning in an unhurried pace, walking, talking and taking photos. A wonderful experience!

I can highly recommend "Calcutta Walks". It was such an intersting, informative and enjoyable tour. We did not only see various sights in Calcutta bit learnt a lot about the city, the people and contemporary India. Our guide was very knowledgable and absolutely professional.

My family and I visited Kolkata in January. We were doing a homeland visit with our 12 old son, who was born in Kolkata. This was truly the highlight of the trip. Calcutta Walks is not your usual history tour, it was full of real time experiences that my son actually enjoyed. We felt a part of the neighborhoods we walked through, even if it was just for the few hours we were there. It is hard to know a city in a short timeframe. Calcutta walks is the best way to get that brief peek into the heartbeat of Kolkata.
