Description: 6 Ballygunge Place is the flagship restaurant of Savourites Hospitality Pvt. Ltd. Till 2003, Kolkata did not have any specialty eatery worth the depth of Bengali cuisine. Savourites came with a unique blockbuster named after the address "6 Ballygunge Place". A specialty eatery serving Bengali cuisine was commissioned after thorough research into cookbooks of the Tagore Era. As they say 'the rest is history'. Today 6 Ballygunge Place is housed in an exclusive Rai Bahadur Bunglow, 100 years old and retained the Old World Charm in architecture and minimalist decor. Visit the place and savor the authentic Bengali Cuisine at its best.

If you want to try authentic bengali food, try this place. The buffet was phenomenal. The place itself does not look like much from the outside, but it is lovely on the inside. Come with an appetite.

6, Ballygunge Place is a house converted into a restaurant with a balance of heritage and modern decor. The ambience is ideal for a relaxed time with family. While the buffet looked sufficiently tempting (the usual course of a Bengali meal--bhaja, shukto, dal, dalna, luchi, alur dum, fish, chicken, mutton, chutney, etc.) we opted for the a-la-carte menu. The highlights were kosha mangsho (mutton in thick gravy) and nolen gur er (jaggery flavored) ice cream. Their "mishti doi" was very tasty too. They also have a good selection of vegetarian starters and mains--the "navaratna paturi" (mixed vegetables in creamy coconut-mustard paste, steamed in a banana leaf) deserves mention.

I found the "bhetki paturi" (fish fillet in mustard sauce, steamed in banana leaf) slightly disappointing--while the mustard paste was well made, the fish was stiff.

you will not be able to decide if the food is better or the ambiance. It looks like just a house from outside and from inside it is a fine dining experience. The Bhetki Patori served here is one of the best dish served in Kolkata.

After getting many rave reviews from friends and colleagues, I went to this restaurant last Christmas eve. It was crowded. We were saved because we made prior reservations. The restaurant may be difficult to locate if you are not familiar with the lanes and by-lanes of Ballygunge area in South Kolkata. There isn't enough parking space too (have to park on the road).
Well lets get on with it. Once you enter the restaurant, you will be greeted by an old building. Maybe the owners wanted to bring in the touch of history to the long tradition of cuisine. Nevertheless, it wasn't up to the mark. The lighting wasn't appropriate, the rooms adjacent to the main entrance was smelly (opposite to the loo entrance). There are some more rooms (halls) inside which are decorated traditionally. Nothing very impressive.
About the food. That is why you came here in the first place right? Well! you won't be too disappointed in this part. They have a variety of food which includes some of the roll of the mill food that you have daily at home as a typical Bengali. And then there are some dishes that you couldn't / wouldn't want to make because of time / complexity. So if you are into delicacy type of food like prawn/ lobster crab, it would make sense to have it here. The taste is also extra ordinarily good.
The cost is on the higher side, it would probably make sense to have thali's which have a combination of lot of items (veg and non-veg). The thali is doesn't come cheap either, but then you are satisfied to have tasted many varieties of food without having to order all of them.

The restaurant staff are average, the look and feel is the same too.

Overall this is good place to go if you ignore its deficiencies and just concentrate on the food.

Disappointed with the setup and appearance at Ballygunge. It is a very old building not fashioned to the today’s needs. Chairs and tables are not giving aesthetic look and comfortable sitting. Charges charged do not justify the cost. Authentic Bengali food is served and food is served hot and tasty. Service is polite but to improve in speed.
