I took the subway from Chandni Chowk to Rabindra Sadan for 5 rupees. As a foreigner, I noticed absolutely nothing unique about this experience - it's just a normal subway just like anywhere else, and its architecture is plain and purely functional (unlike Moscow's subways which are spectacular).

I question why this is even listed as an attraction, except for the reviews from Indians expressing pride as its country's first subway.

My opinion - it is not an attraction - it is simply a way of getting around!

Quick, cheap and fast way to reach destinations within central kolkata. Otherwise extremely bad in terms of maintenance. Non AC compartments for underground rail. How can they do this?
Process to take tickets and waiting time is manageable. Stations need an upgrade too.

You can save lot of money. Only thing that bothers is huge crowd. Trains are very crowdy. If u r comfortable with crowds then u can save alot. Cheap and fast. India's oldest metro.

Yes it is oldest metro and looks like one that too. The train in not at all maintained, the platforms are extremely crowded, please avoid if you are traveling with children or old age people.

Metro system in Kolkata is India's oldest and if you understand it well, you can take this to visit most of the tourist places and save lots of money that would otherwise be spent on taxi.

Key places like Victoria memorial, Kali ghat, birla mandir, Esplanade, Marble palace, airport etc are connected by Metro. Book a hotel close to a metro station and you can save good money.

Tickets are also very cheap- Rs 5 or Rs 10 per ride.
