“Great hotel but some issues with the attitude...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 2, 2012

Very nicely designed hotel; rooms could be a bit noisy so try to get something in the higher floors east side, end of the hallway; for example 511 was ok.

Food from the room service was good, also breakfast was nice (especially dosa + blueberry pancakes).

There are some management issues; some of the staff members are insisting the things what they cannot do for you (opposite ‘what I can do for you’) so definitely some training needed.

Flexible in early check-in and late check out.

Restaurant in the roof-top was very nice; but facing some serious management issues. I went there on Saturday 9pm; one table was occupied inside and one outside. The security was not willing to let me in to have a look (I was coming from the shopping trip so my outfit was not really ‘a clubbing one’). The manager was only concerned if I’m staying in the hotel. The place looked very good and DJ played fantastic music but I can understand this attitude scares people away; I felt sad about that. Ok it was not that many tourists in Kolkata so might also have to do something to that a single Western lady showed up but anyways I’d loved to enjoy a glass or two of good wine if the staff would have been accommodating… Good luck for that club!

There’s a fantastic Thai spa a few minutes walk away from the hotel. Also Mother Teresa / New Market are around 10mins about by taxi. Airport pick-up / drop-off was very professional; when arriving from Port Blair it took total 12mins from the plane to the hotel car including bus transfer; I’m very impressed with Kolkata domestic terminal!!!

After a lot of search on trip-ad-visor and other travel sites, I decided to book myself a room at the Chrome Business Hotel. This place is quite expensive but quite a nice one. The rooms are quite spacious though the front office personnel aren't very professional. The food is not great and the breakfast is quite bad. However, if you are out on a business visit around Science city, this sure is one of the best places to stay.

Had stayed at Chrome on a business visit to Kolkotta. The check-in did take some time but then the staff was apologetic and helpful and warm. The hotel has a spacious feeling about it and unlike most other hotels does not give a claustrophobic feeling. The normal Chrome rooms are well appointed and i stayed in a room with a king bed and had a good sleep.

Had breakfast at the Chrome. The fare was definitely decent - liked the masala dosa and the kachori + cholar dal combination.

The hotel has a unique "Anything" facility which essentially a single window access to all services in the hotel. I wanted to use the LAN facility in the room and had to reach the "Anything" desk 3 times before a cheerful engineer walked in and helped me setup the internet connection.

Will go back to Chrome during my next visit to Kolkotta.

Bad management practices and unfriendly robot employees leave one with the impression of being in narrow gray prison.

Your first impression on arrival will be when they keep you in your taxi while the bomb detection crew goes to work. A convenient metal detector greets you at the front door, which is opened by the door man. More paperwork and forms? You betcha. Time to xerox that passport.

The facilities here are basically two: a bar and a restaurant. I’ve been here for three nights and still can’t get a drink at the bar. The hours are messed up (international travellers, jet lag, hello!). Two military style uniform goons stop you at the roof exit from the elevator. “Closed!” As you watch a DJ spinning loud dub disco to an empty bar room. It is 11:25pm... I say “I just want to walk around the roof garden because I cant sleep. " The view from my room is an office building.” "Sorry sir. Roof closed. See you tomorrow 7:30pm. Good-bye sir". There is a pool out there reportedly, but one that has no water in it.... 'Good-bye, sir', can you feel the burn yet?

Trapped! The only other space to walk is the walled in driveway. Once passed the guard shack.. yes.. a real "check-point Charlie" guard shack, you are in the bleak, dark, filthy mess that is Kolkata. Watch out for the rats and the stray dogs. Late night pub? Get real. This is post-apocalyptic Socialism wreckage at its best.

Towel shortage. Power outages. I checked on converting some foreign cash to rupees at the desk, and they openly lied about the exchange rate by about 10%. (not including the usual fee which is tacked on obviously) . It’s the general attitude that kind of gets you down. A smile, a bow, and the word verbotten. Trained to be alert, but blindingly unthinking robots.

So what’s good: The bed and shower are adequate (though a pedestal bed upon which I lacerated my leg by hitting in the dark), the AC works, and the mini-bar has exactly two bottles of beer. After a few hours you may say “hmm. I might like one more”. “Sorry sir, no beer can be provided via room service after midnight”. So the button on the phone marked “Anything” has been Kolkata-taized into “just sit there and watch the telly”.

I would seriously consider Marriot. No need for a wake up call here, the call to prayer loudspeakers will hit you promptly at 4:30am.

Room Tip: Street noise in Kolkata is spectacular. Get as high as you can. But that wont help. The horns neve...

Stayed for 2 nights. Good rooms with facilities. Good food. Check in took a while (precisely 15 minutes). Would certainly recommend and stay again
