When i visited Kolkata, i definitely wanted to try out authentic Bengali food. When my friends recommended Kewpie's i thought it will be an old, unhygienic restaurant with hoards of people. Anyways, since i had to sample the local cuisine we did land up at Kewpie's. The restaurant is on the ground floor of a residential house and were welcomed by a dog owned by the restaurant owner.

The restaurant looks like a small boutique restaurant in a very makeshift atmosphere. The place is clean and the food is simply delicious. I was told that the food was very typical to a Bengali house and not the regular restaurant type food.

The menu is extensive but everything on it might not be available. There are different types of thalis which include vegetarian food as well as choice of chicken/mutton & fish.

The portions are not very large and one thali can only be enough for one.

I would highly recommend this place to anyone who wants a good home cooked bengali meal.

However, considering it is not a fine dine restaurant, it is expensive at around Rs.800-Rs.1000 per head.

not so clean. i was using a toilet and had a peek into the kitchen. ghastly filthy. again i am from malaysia so nothing i haven't seen. oh well.

then the food is like amazing. yes, a bit miserly but hey it's like 1/3 of the price of the thalis in aheli.

I had gone with very high expectations because of all the buzz surrounding this restaurant but would never go again. There is nothing good about this restaurant except for the decor and the mythical reputation which it has. Food was cold and terrible probably served stale because it tasted bad and unpalatable. The staff think that they have the right to be rude to guests and boss around and the service was horrible. The staff spoke loudly and scolded me for asking about ingredients of a dish obviously untrained about guest allergy possibilities and banged my plate and glass in front of me. I would never go again and have told all my friends to stay away too.

If you want to eat traditional Bengali food of a very high quality, this is the place to go and I would definitely recommend having a thali (veg, meat or fish), which gives a good selection of dishes, to be eaten off also traditional banana leaf. The bedke paturi and similarly mustardy prawns (in the fish tali) were fabulous. I avoided the crowds and went at lunchtime (only downside was that there was so much food I had to go home and sleep it off). The decor is a bit twee and it is not cheap but definitely worth it. Yes, it is a bit hard to find but the laneway is right next to the Netaji Bhavan. By the way, it is CLOSED ON MONDAYS.

Kewpie's kitchen is located close to Forum mall on Elgin Road. When you enter the restaurant, it looks like an old Bengali house. It is very well decorated with good paintings and nice showpieces. The decor is the only good thing about this restaurant.

The food was average, something like my cook makes everyday at home. The food is not at all value for money since the quantity is less and the food is bland. By less quantity I mean you need a magnifying glass for the vegetables and dal in the thali.

The service is very poor since the waiters will throw the food on your plate and go away. If there is a foreigner or tourist in the restaurant, all the stewards and the waiters will gather around them.

Avoid the thali in the restaurant since it is disappointing. Try the kosha maangsho and luchi, it is the saving grace of this restaurant.
