While we were in kolkata we had to entertain someone for dinner and we chose The Hub simply for convenience; because we were staying at the hotel and it was the only multi-cuisine option there.

We went ahead of time, chose the spot, got the tables arranged, even informed the maitre'd of the importance of the dinner to us.

But when it came to ordering and serving, it was the worst experience ever. They had an excellent choice in beer and wine, but then whatever we chose was not there. After being told twice by the server that the selected wine/beer was not there, we asked him to go and check the wines which were available. He came back with a list, we chose one of them, only to find out 15 mins later that that wine was also not in stock. It took us over half an hour to order and get our drinks.

Then there was no one available, the only way to find a server to place an order or even ask for water was to get up and find them. It took them forever to get us the menus, the drinks, the food. Even the cheque. And the prices are obnoxious.

All in all a horrible experience. Best to avoid that place. The quality of service and food qould be justified only if they slashed their prices by 90%. Even then I wouldnt suggest anyone to go there.

Our midnight visit to this 24 hours open restaurant, part of the famed Taj Bengal Hotel, was a big eye opener. There was no welcome greetings by the restaurant staff. We visited as a couple and were offered seating on a table of 4 pax, overlooking the pool.No efforts were made to have us seated comfortably and surprisingly, the 2 sets of extra cutlery, dishes etc remained on the table till we left. The staff serving us presumed we would not order for bottled water and went ahead in serving us normal water. Our initial food order of Garlic Bread and Pizza took about 20 and 30 minutes respectively. The food quality was good. The garlic bread was simply placed on the table with no effort to serve us the food portions. The first slice of pizza was served by the staff and after that the food was left to us for self service. The next order of cheese filled jalapenos snack was similarly placed on the table for us to self serve-it tasted odd and we left it uneaten after having a bite.No query was raised by the staff as to why we have not eaten the food, nor was any feedback asked from us whether we liked the meal or not.
After the bill was settled and we were conversing, seated on our table, the restaurant's manager on night duty came to us,informing us that we need to shift to another table if we intend to continue our conversation, since they need to "service" our table. It was a polite way of asking us to leave the restaurant, in-spite of the fact that half of the tables remaining unoccupied at that time.
While we were having our meal peacefully,in came a group of 2 couple and bought the house down with their loud talks and boisterous behaviour-no visible effort was made to silence them, so as not to disturb other diners.
After this abysmal behaviour by the Taj's staff, we are left wondering what keeps discerning diners going to Taj to get such a ordinary level of service.

The way this country is booming, there have cropped up these restaurants/hotels which offer blingy décor, attract the nouveau riche and get away with average service. However, they make profits and keep their shareholders happy. Then there are the other kinds of hotels that go the extra mile to keep their service standards uncompromising. Sadly, the Taj at Kolkata is the first kind - you can buy their stocks but not their food.

The restaurant in its concept is excellent. The buffet is well laid; the menu is planned keeping varied tastes in mind but, the decent stops there. Everything else is terrible.
For starters, they don't accept bookings; which is about the weirdest thing I have ever heard in a full service restaurant in a premier 5 star property! The last thing I want to do on an evening with my wife looking her best in a Versace is 'wait' till a man in kurta pyjama (read nouveau riche) finishes his pizza margarita and releases his table.

Then in all restaurants in the Taj there is this unsaid concept of 'maximising real estate'. If you are an odd number, they seat you on a table that’s designed for one less. This may be acceptable during the weekend rush but, on a weekday, when half the restaurant is empty, it’s downright weird. I witnessed this at the Chinoserie (read my review) and then again here.

Like I said, the menu is exciting but all that excitement evaporates when 3 drinks ordered are 'out of stock' ... a Hoegarden, Kingfisher Blue and a simple OId Fashioned. The worst thing for a finicky fellow for me is to settle for Coke with my Tandoori.

Finally, the thing what I find most distasteful is the clichéd apology ‘sir, we will set it right the next time.’ Yea right! Ill keep wasting my big bucks so that you can set your SOPs right.

I contrast this with a meal at the La Terrace at the Oberoi Grand where the service (generally excellent) was a tad lethargic (by Oberoi standard) onetime. The waiter just refused to accept the tip stating that it was morally incorrect for him to do so for the lackadaisical service. That is the spirit of foodservice and the Hub @ the Taj just light years away from it.
