I always prefer this hotel in Kolkata because it's central location and near to new market area with good hospitality and cleanliness of the room and price factor. A++++ Hotel in every aspect. Keep it up.

I was here for three separate stays in January 2013. My reaction to this hotel: On my first visit I was rather shocked, the second time less so, and by the third time was pretty used to it. I gave it an 'average' rating given the low price, but if price were not a consideration, I would give it a rating of 'poor'.

Location is very central, near Sudder Street and New Market, but the hotel is not well known to taxi drivers at the airport, so be sure to print out detailed maps and have them with you, and to pronounce the street name to the driver as 'MARkwiss' Street. Marquis St.is very busy from 6 or 7am to midnight or later, and all of that noise works its way into the hotel rooms, so be prepared for noise! (The noisiest rooms are numbers 152-158, which face the street).

Hotel is not well signed. Reception is down an alley off of Marquis St., then up stairs past a parking area for motorcycles. Not a particularly inviting entrance, especially at night. The manager, Mr. Singh, is rather gruff, but don't take it personally as he is that way to everyone. Typical bureaucratic Indian checkin - they want to know everything about you except your blood type and they make you write it all down in a huge book. If you don't want to give up your passport for them to make photocopies of it (which will take at least 30 minutes), bring a copy with you.

The hotel has some rooms on the reception floor and some on the floor two flights above the reception, accessible by lift. (Note that the lift does not go to the street level, so you will have to lug your bags up a flight of stairs to the reception). The advantage of the rooms on the reception floor is that they are away from the street, but the disadvantage is that there is more hall noise with staff coming and going, and there are windows in the wall between the room and the hallway which let light from the hallway into the room at night. Also the hallways on the reception floor are pretty grungy. The hallways for the upstairs rooms are much cleaner. All rooms are rather small - very little free space and no closet - and are pretty grungy. Rooms were swept clean prior to arrival, but had many years of ground in dirt, grime, fingerprints, etc. Beds had hard, thin mattresses. Sheets and pillow cases appeared to be fresh, but blankets definitely needed laundering. Toilets are western style and toilet paper is provided. Hot water via geyser for cat baths (no shower or tub). Bring your own toiletries. You may have to ask for a towel at reception as they seem to have a shortage of them. The geyser and the air conditioner operate off of the same electrical circuit, so you can operate one or the other but not both at the same time. There is a ceiling fan also. There is only one electrical outlet in the room, which the TV is connected to. No room service (but many restaurants and street food nearby) and no WIFI (internet cafe is down the block and opens at around 10am). There is a terrace on the upper floor with some tables and chairs and a nice view of the area.

Rooms are either one king bed or two twin beds. Despite the impression at booking sites that you can reserve a particular room type, this is not the case.

In summary, this place provides one star accommodations at a one star price and it has a great central location. Cleanliness, comfort and hospitality could all be much improved, but what do you expect for $18 a night in Kolkata?

Room Tip: Room 159 is larger than most and is a little quieter than those facing Marquis St.

We chose this hotel still after reading all the reviews just purely because of price & location. For some reason budget Hotel prices in Kolkata appear to be double of most in other parts of India, therefore the fact that you pay more for a hotel under parr is quite annoying. As many have mentioned some of the reception staff are not friendly, having said that we were already pre warned and knew what to expect. The bathroom was grim, filthy sink & toilet seat, also had ants. Sleep was poor, thin mattresses, noise from corridors as walls so thin & two high windows over the beds letting light in from corridor. The positives of the hotel are location...we were able to walk to The Marion, Victoria Memorial, St Paul's Cathedral, and plenty of places to eat nearby. As long as you know what to expect when you are booking this hotel it is bearable for the location.

You get what you pay for, the staff is helpful and friendly.
It was a little difficult to find because the main entrance is on a first floor on the side of the building (wich looks terrible on the outside) but the location is great with awesome street food.

I never had such a bad unfriendly welcome in a hotel in over 45 years of travel.... please don't go there, there are lots of hotels in Calcutta! There are plenty of choices and travellers deserve more than poor attitude, unprofessional atmosphere and shoddy rooms.
I checked out after half an hour, even though I had paid in full for 4 nights accommodation and I am not a fussy traveller. Please look at my other reviews and avoid Oriental Kolkata!

For the price I paid, I am not complaining, but one should be aware what he/she is signing up for when booking a stay at this hotel. It's definitely very well located in Kolkata, with lots of shops all around within walking distance. This hotel sees a large number by domestic and Bangladesh tourists. It's very dirty and run down on the outside however the rooms are fine. Traffic will definitely bother you with all the honking, but the rooms looked decently clean. The toilet was still on a tap, bucket and scoop system. The TV too small and the picture quality definitely unwatchable. Nonetheless, the room rate is really reflective of its quality, so it's still good value

Stayed here from Dec 20 - 23. Rooms are small but very clean and enough if you are on a sight seeing tour. The manager Sardarji was very helpful.
Location of the hotel is highlight, just 10 mnts walk from New market, Parkmetro and esplanade metro (just mentioned some). Taxis and rickshaws are available infront of the hotel all the time. Very good eating places and pub bars are nearby.
I haven't found anything negative about the hotel or ambience. I stayed with my wife. Definitely this will be my first choice in Kolkata on the next trip considering the value for money the hotel provides.

Room Tip: Rooms on the top floor will be better. You have a nice rooftop there to hangout/eat etc.
