Excellent and unique place to visit. You will get the history of mountaineering in a short time. You can also try the mountaineering on a wall simulated as a hill.

“Tenzing Sherpa...”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

U'll find a lost legacy of a man who traversed the most difficult path and left a mark in himalayan mountaineering....its definitely worth a visit especially the museum which most probably is the oldest in the country...ders also an artificial wall for those who want a feel of rock climbing...the institute also provides mountaineering training courses for interested candidates...

“The ultimate Institute which teaches the joy of discovery and provides an aspiration to live.”
Reviewed September 4, 2012

HMI teaches that mountaineering is an art and science and not merely a physical activity. It is one of the finest sports but to practice it without training and technique is a form of deliberate suicide.
Training promotes caution and clear thinking. It alleviates fatigue, danger and improves safety. A mountaineer must not only learn climbing but also understand the mountains. Mountaineering enables you to see further from a greater height. It gives you the joy of discovery and an aspiration to live.

It is difficult for the uninitiated to understand fully the benefits derived from the mountaineering. It is an activity which exercises and develop the best of mental, moral and physical faculties in a person. Training is aimed to develop self confidence, endurance, preservation, determination and spirit of adventure. More than anything else it enables a person to discover himself a new. It is a form of sport in which material gins are negligible and one has to toil hard up the gradient towards an ever receding objective with an iron will and resolve in the face of many odds. A mountaineers is always a gainer even though he may not reach the summit. He learns to appreciate the virtue of sacrifice, the value of above all the spirit of Camaraderie.

The training imparted at the institute does not aim to produce athletes and gladiators; rather it enables a student to shake off his/her differences of mind and narrowness of outlook. Apart from technical training, emphasis is to also laid on discipline, character building and leadership. The self discipline imposed by students in difficult condition to ensure safety at the cost of comfort is of lasting value. In addition to mountaineering HMI also aims to instill in its students certain values of environmental protection, love for nature, protection of flora & fauna and also cultural diversity.

“Good collection”
Reviewed September 2, 2012

HMI has a great collection of mountaineering instruments. Also pre-dated collection of flora-fauna is impressive. They also maintain a rock climbing institute, where they give rock climbing sessions. Want to avoid rush, pay Rs50 (less than $1) and get the same lesson from a trainer on a rock just beside it named Gombu Rock.
