Our experience here was good. The staff were all very helpful. The owner was very helpful, friendly and pleasant and it was good to have a nice living area which was warm where we could chat to other travellers. It was cold in the bedroom but we were given very large hot water bottles which were still warm in the morning. Our floor was at the top up 97 steps with no lift, so that is useful to note if anyone has problems with steps.

How fortunate we were to have discovered this beautiful hotel on our very first visit to Darjeeling.. It was a sudden last minute weekend trip planned with a group of friends and we hadn't made prior bookings. After reaching the hill station and spending about an hour on Mall Road trying to find a hotel with available rooms (it was peak season as we had gone on Good Friday weekend), we decided to give this hotel a try. After a breathless walk up a couple of flight of stairs, the reception was quite inviting with its plush wooden finish and beautiful paintings of the mountains. We were given a room on the floor above the reception, which, to our delight, was nestled between a lovely and comfortable lounge area with a fireplace and a library full of numerous books to choose from. The room was carpeted and one side was covered with windows providing breath taking panoramic views of the sprawling town and hills that seem to extend to the horizon. The best part was the beautiful sight of sunrise over the Kanchenjunga range that greeted us in the morning. Which was a big surprise as we weren't aware that the sight was visible from the hotel.. Another charming feature is the lovely lounge area full of comfortable sofas and cushions, a fireplace and windows and good books all around. Nice place to hang out and relax or catch up with other travelers. During check out we were greeted by the lovely Tibetan lady owner who greeted us very warmly. Overall, a lovely and comfortable little abode in the middle of the lively centre of town close to all the famous sites and eating joints and shopping areas.. Only wish they had complimentary tea of the famous Darjeeling region.. :)

The Tibetan family (Sanguy and Nordu) who run this hotel are real masters at it - and at the same time, you feel like you're at home, except for all the great service you get. They have created an at-home experience in their inviting lounge area where most of the guests spend their hotel time when not sleeping - sitting around the wood burning stove, whether swapping travel stories over tea and biscuits, or gazing at the Himalayas, (or if it's hazy, then out onto busy Darjeeling below), or using the guest computer or their laptops, or reading. Situated on the 5th floor of the building, which itself sits near the top of steeply terraced Darjeeling, and furnished with full picture windows on 2 sides of the common area - the lounge is irresistible.
A most generous and personable host, always wearing her warm smile, Sangay clearly aims to have her family and staff anticipate and take care of the needs and comfort of their guests. They provide innumerable amenities we never, or rarely, found elsewhere, like a nightly hot water bottle (a welcome warmer on cold nights), well-stocked library, wifi, computer, storage of your bags if you go off for a few days on a trek, and a fabulous huge buffet breakfast which almost all the guests opt for (omelette, oatmeal, cold cereal, cheese (western kind), toast, butter, marmalade, orange, banana, coffee, tea, and even steamed milk), and loads of information. (Sangay gratuitously offered additional kinds of help and items to us, which we eventually declined so as not to wear out our welcome there. For the same reason, and with some reluctance, I've decided to not specify them so that the hotel doesn't start to encounter routine requests for them.)
The family is well-connected with the Tibetan community, and Sangay gladly shared with us interesting conversations about its history and current issues, along with some practical references - including to Trek Mate, the high quality outfitter company owned by Tsewang Trogawa with whom we took a 6 day trek along the Singalila Ridge along the India/Nepal border.
The rooms and bathrooms were spacious, clean, and everything was in good working condition. The bathrooms seemed newer, and furnished with good quality fixtures and tiles.
Additional location conveniences of the Dekeling- it's located at one end of "the Mall", a market street with useful shops and closed to vehicles, and 3 good restaurants are in its building: Lunar, which has the best dosa in town, and 2 small Tibetan restaurants - Kunga's and Dekevas.
We spent 8 nights at the Dekeling Hotel - 4 before and 4 after our trek - and would gladly have lingered there longer except we had to catch our flight back to the US.

Dekeling offers you the best! Polished wooden interiors and an excellent lounge are the highlights. It has everything to offer- from a corner library to a cozy fireplace. The lounge upstairs is the perfect place for indulging in a conversation . The USP of the hotel are the 'rooms with a view'.One can witness the magnificent sunrise over Kanchenjunga from the hotel room itself. So you needn't wake up at 3 in the morning and rush to the sunrise-viewing spot. I and 3 of my travel mates take rtae this hotel 'excellent' without hesitation!

What a gem! We stayed here for a few nights before doing the 5day Singalila trek, and then a couple of nights afterwards. We requested the same room (budget in the attic, shared bathroom with a view of the mountains - on a clear day!) & got it no problem. In fact we were welcomed "home" by the adorable owner on our return! The beds & bedding were divine; the common areas lovely & the addition of a hot water bottle every night a very special (& appreciated!) touch. Hot water availability was variable (but great shower when it was) and shared bathroom could've done with a more frequent clean. However I would thoroughly recommend the Dekeling for its warmth (hot water bottle AND welcome) & gladly stay again in a jiffy :)

India can be daunting: the crowds, the incessant horn-honking, the simultaneous threats of falling into some hole while hitting one's head. High above Darjeeling is a place where you can escape that. Hotel Dekeling should not be missed. Sangay (the owner with husband Norbu) and her Tibetan family are great hosts and they provide amenities that delighted us: a great common room with large windows that look out over the town (sometimes, in the mornings, you see Kanchenjunga); a great library (Western classics, Indian classics, others); an atmosphere that enables and encourages great conversation with other guests/travellers in the common room; a location that is an enjoyable walk away from the places we wanted to get to (Observatory Hill, Himalayan Mountain Institute, Tibetan Refugee Center, restaurants, etc.). (Lunar restaurant downstairs has the best dosa we enjoyed in India. Kunga--also downstairs--serves up very good food, too.) They happily provided the usual additional services such as advice regarding Darjeeling activities, as well as unusual services, like volunteering her hot-water bottles for our Singalila trek. The service is attentive and proactive. Our room and private bath was more than adequate; we were happy that it was clean and well-maintained by the staff. We gladly recommend it to anyone who can make it up the stairs. (The walk up provides an aerobic workout!) Bill Lindenfelser, Rochester, NY, USA

Super friendly team. About 5 flights of stairs from street level to Hotel Reception plus another 1 or 2 to the room so pace yourself on arrival. Once inside it's worth it. Good room selection. We had Himalaya facing room which would have given fantastic view if the cloud had not been thick in the valley. Nevertheless we could watch the street action below. Good food, comfy lounges, and great atmosphere with Tibetan hospitality.
