I travelled on the Himalayan Railway in late December. This is the only way you should travel too/from Darjeeling! Totally deserving of its official UNESCO status as one of huge best journeys in the world, the views are stunning, and the train is simply EPIC!
Latest travel advice:
Due to landslides the service is not from NJP, it is from Kuresong. There is a lot of general advice out there, but it could not find specific advice so I hope you find this useful.
There is no pre-paid taxi service or rail replacement service from NJP to Kuresong. But it is very easy to get to Kuresong. A taxi, after light negotiation is rs.1000 including a rs.30 road toll. The taxi takes 1.5 hours from NJP to Kuresong. It is very easy to arrange this at NJP and just demand what you want.
Kuresong has a warm, comfortable waiting room. The town itself is very charming, with a cake shop opposite the station to rest whilst waiting for the train.
The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway is a must do when in India, don't let the fact half the line is closed put you off, the effort to get to Kuresong is well worth it.
