If you want to have fun choose a cloudy day and steam engine otherwise you won't have fun because scenic beauty of Darjeeling remains no more ,now it's a highly polluted, populated and unplanned hill station so if you want to enjoy toy train ride go on a day after rains or on a cloudy day and make sure of boarding on a steam engine pulled train.

We booked Toy Train for 6th March via rail tourism web site, We found the journey to and fro took 2 hours from Darjeeling to Ghum and back to Darjeeling, halt at Batasia Loop for 10 mins and Ghum for 30 mins. The cost per person has increased to Rs.460/- since last two weeks. Can be booked via irctc.co.in. My 2.5 yrs old daughter liked the ride, the ride had diesel engine, being bengali I had good conversation with the gaurd and engine driver, one of the steam engine got faulty is the reason for not having steam engine for next couple of days. Only two ride per day 10:40AM and 1:20PM, we took the 10:40AM one. We got nice view at Ghum, watching cloud entering people's home.

you should book the tickets from IRCTC.from -DJ to DJRZ, there are 3trains available now.actualy they are not steam engine, they are diesel engine.its a nice experience but you will not get an extra ordinary view like the toy train in ooty or himachal

There are 4 joyrides - 8am, 10.40am, 1.20pm and 4pm. We went on the 4pm joride, which takes off from Darjeeling railway station to Ghum railway station via Batasia Loop where there is a stop of 10 min. At Ghum, there is a stop for 30 min. The journey is quite exciting as one can see batasia loop with the background of Mt Kanchenjunga and some other breathtaking views on the way.
