New Elgin Darjeeling.....now that i have stayed there over 3 times i felt its time for me 2 share dis secret haven tucked away in d queen of hills Darjeeling. I have stayed here with friends with family n no matter who ur traveling with b it friends, family, solo dis hotel has something for every 1.

If u know ur bollywood then spot d local "bobby deol lookalike" at d gate when u enter, enjoy d welcome drink n yes don't feel shy to ask for a refill, as i have found they r accommodating!

D first thing which strikes me when i visit any hotel is its welcome, i think most of us can tell when d welcome is forced or part of d job kinda smile but here there is an actual warmth n smile n that twinkle in d eye which greets us n makes u feel wanted n special already.

The lounge n d new done up bar is very british n has an elegance 2 it. Sitting at d bar with a drink n then d fire really makes u wonder wether ull actually make it to d room, cause within minutes ur just so comfortable...

Walking to d bar i passed some girls sipping their wine n playing monopoly....man it looked so relaxing that i almost joined them.....N by d way d hotel has chess n internet n other board games available..

U enter ur room n there is a nice sofa sitting area welcoming u in front of d lcd tv, along with a dressing table n a very important to me a neat n clean sanatized bathroom. All ur essentials r well provided, slippers,toiletries n just when i thought they missed a thing by not having a hair dryer voila i i opened d door n there it was! Best part darjeeling has a water problem but here there was 24hrs running hot water! D latest addition 2 d hotel services is d massage room! do pamper urself! I have been told soon they ll b providing dvd players n movies which 1 can avail n c by d fire at nite, just abt perfect!

D meals which were included in d room rates r buffet style with a different cuisine every meal, d best part is incase u feel continental n its indian all u need do is say tell them n its taken care of....a nice inclusion is when i reached d dinning area there was a table already marked n reserved for me with my name on it! just kinda feels exclusive....d food like all my visits excellent n d staff there really know how to take care of u....

After my meal wandered outside to d garden area n had myself a smoke with darjeeling shimmering in its light in front of me...parked my self on the rocking swing n was just so relaxed.

Fire in d room got me back n after watching tv when i got into my bed was pleasantly surprised to find a hot water bag...in d cold dec of darj that was d best companion!

So alas next day with a heavy heart i had 2 leave but like always i am already looking forward 2 my next stay at d elgin...

2 any 1 going 2 darjeeling i recommend strongly 2 stay here.....it may seem a bit expensive compared 2 other hotels in d vicinity but....good things always come at a good price....having said that this place is worth every nickel, dime n cent or euros or dollars or whichever currency u paying in!!

I have been staying at The Elgin Hotel for quite a few years now. In spite of many other hotels opening in and around Darjeeling, there really is no other place quite like it. It is a heritage property, in the true sense of the word. Whether it is the furnishing, artifacts, paintings or the several working fireplaces, everything is true to its heritage set deep in India's British Raj time.

If you are looking for a place to enjoy, relax and mingle with interesting people, this definitely is the place to be. The beautifully set lounge and bar, with all its antique furnishing, is set perfectly to enjoy a few drinks in a warm and cosy environment.

The locations in very central. It is a short walk (< 1 min) from the Mall Road and all the shops.

Food at The Elgin is fantastic. Since they have buffet style dining, it helps to inform the chef in advance about your food preferences for the next meal. They always try and accommodate cuisine request from the guests.

The rooms are large, spacious, and most importantly, very well appointed to. The beds are extremely comfortable and so are the bathrooms. A lot of care has been taken in furnishing the rooms and it shows. From silk lounge chairs to antique wooden furniture, the rooms at The Elgin has it all.

My advise to any traveller is that if you are looking for a luxurious stay at a hotel, that has great attention to the smallest details, at an affordable price then, The Elgin is the place to stay.

Oh...almost for this, they now have a masseur who, according to my wife, is "really really really" good.

hotel elgin in darjelling is a marvel of its own.its got the indo british charm of architecture. the rooms are amazing and spacious. the food is fantastic. the moment you see the property u know there is no where else you want to stay. its got such a strong pull towards it at least for me cause of the old school charm. the rooms have a fir place and all the other places like the bar the dining room all of them have been so well mainted giving it the perfect atmosphere to be in.the property is nestled between the hubrub of darjelling but once you cross the gate you forget everything. walking distance from elgin is the market place the famous keventers and glennaries.

This a great older hotel that retains a feel of the old british 'raj'. It really is quite elegant and I would say very beautiful. It is also good value.

I found the good points to be:

1. room was huge;
2. very clean;
3. elegant in an old style way;
4. great value - I tried another similar hotel up the road and they were literally twice the price.

Check out the fantastic timber flooring in some of the rooms. Take time to look at the wonderful historic photo's around the place.

Some bad points:

1. service - not really great. It took no less than four calls to get room service.
2. they failed to mention they have no generator for when the power goes out.
3. I booked a wake up call and a car to go up tiger hill. No wake up call. Got up anyway to my 'backup' phone alarm. No car! The only car had already gone up without me. Tried to get the 'night staff' to find a car to take me up. That took them 45 minutes. Missed the sunrise.

Stay here but double (no triple) check that your car for Tiger Hill is booked. I would highly recommend it to honeymoon couples or for romantic trips.

This hotel is way over priced, even with a hefty discount that I negotiated on the way out. I was supposed to stay for two nights, but left after one. Rooms were o.k., but rooms in the front are loud and rooms in the back face into a cement wall. The food was greasy and oh, the power issues. The power went out just about every hour and their generators are not dependable. The worst power issues of any hotel I stayed at in India, even the small hotel down the road was better. The staff didn't seem to care about the guests and seem sad. I would definitely not recommend this hotel. They didn't even have a tea kettle in the room - it's Darjeeling for goodness sakes! On the upside the old world decorating is lovely.

I looked around at the other fancy hotels in Darjeeling and this was one the nicest (even though it's not the most expensive). It has a nice style and consistent theme. The service was great. That being said, don't expect the 4 seasons--it's nice but not unreal.

We stayed in the new elgin for 5 days fro 3rd to 7th June. We were impressed at the outset- the welcome was nice and the cherry brandy was warm! However, during the course of the stay we realised that the amount being charged by the hotel( the entire amount was taken 15 days in advance!) was excessive given the services (or lack of them!) it offers.
1- Even though there is a bathtub you cannot use it because the room water heater heats only 30-35 lit of water at one go, insufficient to fill the tub. Management said that the hill station is facing a water scarcity- that is understandable; but then why charge so much?
2-The shampoo/ soap etc in the bathrooms are not replenished daily if you dont specifically ask.
3- No tea maker in the room- pity for Darjeeling!
4- Restaurant service very slow and poor. Had to wait half hour for chapati and only got it when complained to the manager.
5- The waiters in the restaurant talk too much and too loudly amongst themselves.
6- The reception is not prompt-we had to check out early morning but were told that the accountant was "sleeping"! This was after we had already informed in the night.
7- No air conditioning! Well maybe not needed in Darjeeling but the windows have to be kept closed all the time else insects can get in and then it becomes stuffy as hell! We settled for opening the windows with the curtains drawn over them which served the purpose. Something needs to be done for air circulation.
8- The compulsory AP seems to be a ploy to get more money given the extremely poor food quality- they seem to have no specialised chefs. In any case we preferred eating out in one of the numerous surrounding joints
9- Given that the location is excellent, the rooms are good, and the ambience is suitably heritage but this is not enough. For the amount they charge the service must be top class and management much better. One gets the feeling that the staff is well meaning but they have not been trained well by the management and their service conditions are not good- they don't seem inspired. Ofcourse they expect tips all the time!
Our stay was enjoyable because we decided to ignore the defects in the hotel and concentrate on the good things in the hotel and in Darjeeling!
