Elgin Darjeeling is a beautiful hotel from the outside as well as the inside. The staffs are friendly and courteous and they are like one big family. The welcome drink, a small glass of cherry brandy was an appropriate drink to serve as it was cold outside(end of November). We stayed in Room No 58 on the first night - probably that's the room which received lots of complain as there is no view. We could only see the roof from the window. We didn't really mind as the room was cosy and well appointed and all we wanted was a good night's sleep after a nauseous journey from Bagdogra. There was complimentary butter cookies and they were fresh and nice. They were also replenished everyday. My husband didn't have a good sleep that night as there was some noise (sounds like water pump) in the wee hours of the morning so we asked to change our room. The manager kindly obliged and we stayed at Room No 53 the second night. This room is smaller but brighter and has a fantastic view. Another thing very nice about the hotel are the lounges. They are all elegantly furnished and decorated. The food was alright but after a few meals they start to taste the same. I have posted tons of photos of this hotel in my personal blog. Do visit it to view more at http://anythinglily.blogspot.com/2013/12/darjeeling-part-2-elgin-darjeeling.html

Room Tip: Room No 53 is nice.

My overall experience with the hotel was outstanding.I was given room mo 57 on 2nd floor which was more than expected.A warm welcome with cherry brandy, soothing and calm interior complimenting with the external environment,Eye catching Russian breed dogs bought specially from Italy were the visitor's delight. The red carpet flooring, antique collection of stuffs and their maintenance costs a lot.Room was neat and clean , all equipped with facilities expected from a heritage hotel.Flooring, walls and roof were wooden and giving a cottage feel , although too tall people can find it a trouble moving at the corners due to shape of roof.Water and room heating was not an issue even in the month of DEC.The locality where the hotel is situated is a bit noisy (market area nearby) but within its great. Lastly , it was due to the hotel that Darjeeling was looking more beautiful

Room Tip: Room no. 57 was beautiful but no view . Please check with reception beforehand for a scenic view room as they are limited

Spent two nights here and enjoyed our visit. Checked in and welcomed with Buddhist scarf and welcome drink of cherry brandy. Received room #32 at the top of the stairs. If you're not spending much time in the daylight in the hotel, this is a great room. It was a suite with a full sized sitting room with sofa, chairs, coffee table, side board, fireplace, etc. plus a separate bedroom (armoire and fireplace) and bathroom with tub/shower. There isn't any view out the bedroom window.

Room includes fridge, water kettle for coffee/tea, and 1L of water daily. Also in the room are two space heaters for warmth (really take the chill out of the air), and the bathroom stocks bath and hand towels (no washcloths), soap, shampoo, lotion and bath gel.

Breakfast and dinner were included in our room rate. Breakfast was buffet with eggs also made to order.

Dinner was also buffet style with soup and desserts. Each night had a different theme (Chinese, Thai, Indian, Continental, etc.).

There are plenty of public spaces for you to relax in throughout the property to use the free wifi (not in the rooms). Password when we were there was theelgin321 for your use. There's also afternoon tea available for those days the weather is nasty or you just feel like enjoying the property's charm. Great mailbox for posting your letters and cards.

Lots of upscale trekking guests and were nicely surprised to see them dressed up (smart casual, not trekking wear or coat/tie) for dinner.

Umbrellas available for loan from front desk.

We're I to return to Darjeeling, I'd happily stay here again!

We didn't get to stay at this hotel unfortunately because it was fully booked. However we did stop in for the High Tea as well as some spa services.
The ambience and decor of the hotel is very British colonial and very warm and inviting. High tea consisted of many delicious English and Indian treats and we were easily full with the generous portions. It was a lovely experience and we would have loved to have stayed here!
The spa offerings were ok but definitely not the hotel's forte. The spa room was rather small and the services are probably not up to par for what people would expect.
Would definitely recommend the high tea though!

Having booked a three week trip to India, having visited Delhi,Agra, Jodhpur, Jaipur and Udaipur prior to visiting Darjeeling, we were very disappointed in this hotel. We arrived and were shown to what seemed a very basic room, very unlike what we had been staying in previously. The room was dirty, cold and uninviting. To our horror we then found a mouse running around our room, something we were not prepared to accept. We immediately requested that we were moved rooms, where we were advised that there was no available rooms until the following day. We insisted that we were not prepared to stay in the room and that an alternative had to be found. We were moved to another room in the eaves of the hotel which was indeed mouse free but very cold, musty and a bath that flooded the bathroom to the extent that it resembled a mini foot bath. To top it all the food on the first night was to say the least in edible and in fact unrecognisable. This was totally disregarded by the staff in the hotel, no apology was received and no further mention was made to our first night's experience and whether we were now comfortable. Avoid room 54 I say but the only saviour to our three terrible nights was the porter/ cleaning boy who bought us a hot water bottle every night.

Dear Madame !

We are sorry to note that you were unhappy with your stay with us . The reception staff was able to give you the best possible room available at the time as the hotel was running on a high occupancy . The reception staff did change your room a second time but once again were unable to meet your expectations . We once again apologise for the inconvenience!
