We stayed 3 days in Darjeeling. We had a deluxe room on the 3 floor. The hotel was heritage property. We found it clean with a very nice staff. Food was excellent. also they prepare as per our request. We walked to and from the market which was not far but helped to acclimate us to the 6,000 feet altitude. Very nice stay ******.

This time in India we stayed 3 days in Darjeeling to recover from jet lag. We has a suite on the second floor. The hotel has old world charm. If you are looking for modern, this is not for you. We found it clean with a very nice staff. We walked to and from the market which was not far but helped to acclimate us to the 6,000 feet altitude. Very nice stay.

'No' is not a word in the dictionary of the staff of this hotel. From the guard at the entrance to their staff inside the kitchen... guest's desire is their command. Lovely property, and awesome food. We went there for our anniversary celebration, and it was the best choice we could have made. The girl at the reception was watchfull enough to ask for 'Jain' food for the dinner buffet, without even my asking for it. And for three days that we stayed there, the staff in the dinning hall would ensure the same. though my son fell extremely sick during our travel, the Manager at the reception was extremely helpful in calling for a doctor, medicine, canned milk and everything that I needed. A lovely hotel, run by very caring staff. What else would one want when you are away from home!

We stayed at the Elgin for 4 nights for a relaxing break in Darjeeling before going trekking in Sikkim, and had a great (but not perfect) time. The staff were extremely friendly and helpful, although the service was quite slow at times. We stayed in the Attic room for the first night, which whilst very romantic was extremely noisy (mostly dogs). Also, the bathroom window does not shut properly and has no lock (a bit disconcerting when there are signs in the rooms warning of shutting the windows or monkeys can get in a steal your stuff). The staff were very kind and moved us into a regular room for the final 3 nights, which was much quieter and more secure. The food was excellent when it was local cuisine, but the one night when they served western food was disappointing. We thoroughly enjoyed relaxing in the garden and lounge with an excellent high tea in the afternoons. Overall a charming place to stay, if not as polished as you might expect for the money.

Room Tip: Rooms looking out over the valley are quieter. Bring earplugs if you are staying in the attic room!

I stayed in this hotel two different times -- once when it was quite full and once nearly empty -- and it was quite a different hotel each time. When full, service was snappy and efficient, and dining room was up to snuff, and everybody was friendly. When empty, the staff seemed to have gone home; nobody could remember to turn the Wifi on, I had to go hunting around for help, and the dining room was scraping together leftovers. Oh well, it is a pretty and well appointed hotel, if a bit of a maze to get around in, and the location in Darjeeling is great for walking tours around this Queen of the Foothills city. Elgin has a chain of restored Victorian hotels around Sikkim and West Bengal, and while this is not the strongest of the bunch, it is still very pleasant and relaxing.

Room Tip: Nice views of the city from 53-55.

what was bad
the food was substandard and the set menus did not flow (just a mix of different things)
the beds were uncomfortable and everything seemed old!
generally not what you paid for! id reccommend the mayfair hotel

what was good
the elgin likes to have dogs around the place, and their husky looking white snow dogs lilith and sky were just too adorable

Room Tip: everything is old...

Dear Madam!

Firstly we would like to thank you for staying with us . As Darjeeling is a small town with very limited suppliers it is only possible for the hotel to prepare set menus in the restaurant for lunch & dinner. We have also inspected the condition of the bed and mattress of your bedroom after your feedback and they are perfectly in good condition . We are sorry that our hotel and staff did not meet your expectations . Lastly we would like to thank you for appreciating the 2 pet Samoyed hotel dogs .

A very nice place to stay in Darjeeling with courteous and smiling staff always willing to please their guests. From the minute you enter this grand old place you feel welcome and the same feeling lingers all along your stay. I loved looking around the place with its vintage furniture, old photographs of Darjeeling more than a hundred years ago and the atmosphere of an era long gone. Our meals were taken in a nice dining-room with dishes in a buffet style. A mix of Nepalese, Tibetan and Indian dishes as well as a touch of Britain with its apple-pies and custards!
The garden is especially beautifully maintained, manicured lawns and lots of European flowers due to the rather cool climate.
While we were there I was taken ill and the staff did their very best to ease the pain and were attentive to my every needs. A place to be recommended for sure!
