We stayed at this hotel during our travels to India & Nepal, visiting our friends from the Gurkha community.
This hotel is so friendly, all the staff are in traditional costumes, it is like being in colonial times, with afternoon teas being served in the parlour, whilst reading a book (of which there are plenty) or even a news paper in front of a lovely coal fire.
You can even request that a fire be lit in your room.
Our overall experience of this hotel was second to none.

Room Tip: This is a very very old hotel and would not be liked by the young fitness fanatics. Also the hotel...

There can be no better place to stay in Darjeeling than the Windamere. The location is right off the square, it is quiet and there is every comfort you would want. The meals are awesome, in the five days we stayed there we were not raving about the meals and service. The staff here is so accomodating, they even opened the dining room early on the day we left so we could have a full breakfast, and packed a lunch for us to eat on the way to the airport. We were there the end of Septmenber, so each night after a walk around town, we had a fire waiting for us in our room. Fantastic place, I would go back in a heart beat. Grotmo

Room Tip: The Observatory or Pepper are excellent

We loved this property. It is an atmospheric Raj style and strives hard to create a sense of being in a special place. We stayed in one of the suite rooms which was right above a series of rooms that exist just for sitting, reading, socializing replete with beautiful pictures and books.

The woman who runs the place over tea kindly showed us an interesting video of that she made on the history of the region which really helped fill in quite a number of questions that we had about both Darjeeling and Sikkim.

Dinner was a bit over-the-top with candle light white-glove service but it was all part of the charm. The location is right in the heart of a walking area with great views and close to the main pedestrian-only square. I was able to go for a run early in the morning; the only worry were the monkeys that are out in the early AM.

Room Tip: The suite rooms are quite nice

I stayed for 4 nights in the "Prince Peter of Greece" suite this Easter. Just gorgeous! Two rooms, three beds, a large bathroom with a old bathtub (with feet!), a working chimney, which gives a nice warmth during the night.
The service is smooth and helpful. Mrs Clarke is a delightful hostess, who introduce you to the history of the premises.
The food is delicious, with menus with both western and indian cuisine. I loved the dinners at candlelight with a white gloves service! Back to ols British times!
For the British atmosphere, I also appreciated the High Tea, served in front of one of the chimneys of the estate.
The staff give you plenty of useful information, and arrange excursions with safe drivers at reasonnable prices.
If I add that the hotel is situated some 50 meters from the Chowrasta, the main place of Darjeeling, you may understand that it is a prime location for the discovery of the beautiful Darjeeling.
But if you like standardised rooms like you have in business hotels worldwide, stay clear! This hotel is for people who appreciate romantism of ancient times.

One can really feel like they have just stepped back in time of the British Raj. Rooms are elegant and they give you the charm of the yesteryear. They serve a typical British breakfast with a menu that gives you an idea of how things were served back in 1930's. Music too takes you back to that time. Staff is polite and helpful and view from every where is breath taking. They have a small but delightful bar.

"Other Times, Other Places " is the title of a delightful documentary scripted by Elizabeth Clarke, one of the directors of the hotel. It pretty much sums up the Windamere experience.*

If you are looking for typical 5 star facilities such as a 100 page room service menu, an impossible to eat range in the breakfast buffet, 24 hour coffee shop, gym, etc. then I would suggest you look elsewhere.

However, if you want to be part of a world long gone, elegant, gracious and slow paced, spend a few days at the Windamere. You will not regret it.

The hotel is located on Observatort hill and the views are to kill for. The rooms are very olde world and almost seem neglected at first glance. Once you settle in, the genuine period furniture, comfy sofas, flowery curtains really get to you. The plumbing is modern, so no chains to pull! You can have a room without TV if you wish.

The food is exceptional, but be prepared for the chef to decide what you eat! The meals are all served to you by liveried waiters and it's set manu all the way. Thee breakfast has the standard items and the lunch and dinner are very satisfying. Being a true "Raj" hotel, they start off with soup, followed by a western main course, followed again by an Indian one if you have the space for it! The desserts are all "cooked" and were not repeated once in the six nights we spent there. Neither were the main courses. The food puts most of our city based "speciality" western food restaurants in the shade.

Whilst there is only a gentle suggestion on this account, the atmosphere positively emcourages you to dress for dinner. I had a jacket on all evenings and my wife dressed "up" too. Added to the air of make believe which is so special to this place.

The staff are exceptional without exception. There is genuine pride in them for their hotel and it comes across in the service. Kudos to the management for fostering such a spirit.

In conclusion, a wonderful place to laze, read, chat, totally unwind. We are returning every year!

* Please ask the front office to have this documentary screened for you. They accompany it with a drink!

Room Tip: All rooms are nice, but you may like to check for views in case you plan on spanding time in the roo...
