I was excited about the Hotel but it did not turn out to be what was expected, rooms are ill maintained and hot water supply is poor, Breakfast, there were not choices,
The old pictures on wall of tea room / music room are well decorated but paying Rs 10000 for night is not justified.

From reading this, it sounds as if this guest may have been misinformed about our status - that is, we are "intentionally old". We are right out of the late 1880's. I do have some sympathy here as I feel that ours was not the correct hotel for them. Maybe a more modern property? However, I am curious about the comment on "hot water" as all of our rooms work on a geyser system, so the hotel hot water is 24/7 . Should we experience a power cut (throughout the Hills), then we switch immediately to a large generator, which not only supplies light but heat. I am also wondering about the comment on breakfast as we are usually advised that we supply too much! Our guests can flit from Continental to Indian or just have Indian. Continental is: fresh fruits/ porridge/muesli/cornflakes/ eggs to order, with bacon, or sausage and potato and tomatoes + loads of home baked toast + the best Darjeeling Tea and Ground Coffee. Indian could be many things, but most definitely South Indian (which is very popular).

Our trip to this beautiful hotel was marred by the presence of a group who were putting up for a long period. They had their own gun toting security who were constantly sitting and chatting in front of our cottage . Their AK 47s were a real distraction and spoiling the serene mood. This group was all over the hotel/dining hall etc resulting in other guests being huddled to other corners for their food etc. The hotel needs to be careful on not letting the other guests feel intimidated. Other things were quite good except the fixed meals require some quick changes and not remain so predictable.

I feel very sorry for this guest. I was out of town on business but heard about this group. All we were told was that a "V.V.I.P" was arriving and needed quite a few rooms. We had a holy man with his retinue and it turned out this way. I sincerely apologise for this (and I believe our General Sales Manager also expressed serious concern as well). All I can say it, I would personally like to invite this guest and his family back to visit us again. Could he please call us?
His comment on the "fixed meals" really belongs to a hotel restaurant. Ours is a Colonial establishment with an "invited private guest" environment. We have a "Private Dining Room" and a fixed menu. This has been going on since 1939. However, if the guest would write to us, I will personally see to it that a special menu is created for him. Thank you to Trip Advisor for allowing this person to vent his frustration. We felt the same way, I assure you! Best wishes.

If you are going to Darjeeling look no further than the Windamere. Awesome food (particularly western) and prompt service. The bar is fabulous as are the various lounges . The service by Lucas at the bar was particularly awesome .
We had only one problem. Our bed creaked. All in all we are very happy we stayed at The Windamere. If and when we go back to Darjeeling, we will stay at The Windamere only.

Room Tip: The observatory hill rooms are good.

If you want flat-screen TV and a mini bar this is not for you. But if you want the flavour of how the British sought to bring the English country house party to India this is the closest you will get. Set in gardens high up in Darjeeling with great views all around are a set of buildings with rooms to evoke the Raj. Beds are comfortable and our rooms were spacious. Appropriate rugs and fireplaces and lots of wardrobe space; but think 1912 for the atmosphere. Lots of warm water for the bath and shower in the modernised bathroom. Good polite service and interesting food in the dining room. The Scots planters would have approved of the porridge and marmalade and toast. But they would also have enjoyed the fresh fruit and the eggs any style. Main meals with soup, a European course, something Indian and a sweet (five not too large courses) were also attractive...
But the public rooms and the afternoon teas really add to the house party atmosphere.
Well placed for tours and activities of various kinds we found this a very good and interesting experience.

Room Tip: Rooms in the central building which houses the public rooms are convenient and very spacious. But ot...

Staying in Windamere is like going back in the Colonial India. Windamere was initially established as a boarding house for single English and Scottish Tea Planters in Darjeeling. It is now one of the last preserved hotels of the Raj.

Rooms & Cottages still retain the decor of early 1900's. Fire place is lit every night to make the rooms cosy.

Price of the room includes Breakfast, Lunch, Afternoon Tea & Dinner. Three meals are served as a fixed menu which keep changing. Served as they do in Army mess. Food quality is simply AWESOME. We were a part of Wellness Retreat Group of 20 people with the Celebrity Nutritionist
& Trainer Rujuta Diwekar and one of the reasons she chooses this hotel is for its healthy food. Afternoon tea is served in rooms which were used in Colonial era to socialise (think of these rooms as facebook of that time). Do remember to browse through one of the dozens of albums from 1960...to recent. Tea served is Darjeeling First flush.

Location of Windamere is central. Downtown Darjeeling is 2 mins walk. Windamere has two entrance if you go down from one, it is a circular path which can be used for jogging (1.6 km)

Dont miss the sunrise, check with the hotel on the sunrise time and be there 30 mins prior. On a clear day you can spot Mount Kunchanjunga. For both sunrise and Mount Kunchanjunga exit the hotel from the temple side, go down hill, take a left turn you will reach a spot with benches (5 mins walk)

Don't forget to watch the video in DHRC & try to meet Ms. Elizabeth J Clarke (Director Operations) She is the human encyclopedia of Darjeeling.

This is the place which seems to have unchanged over so many years. everything thing looks so antique ...the right place to experience how it would have been in the early 19th century. the food is truely awsome.

Stayed for 3 nights in December and enjoyed good food and met some nice people. When we arrived we were freezing after having waited at Kurseong Station for four hours because the train was delayed so it was wonderful to be shown to our room and find the fire already lit nicely warming the room. Service is good, nothing too much trouble. Would love to revisit.

Sadly weather was very foggy during our stay so could not enjoy the lovely views from the terrace. Darjeeling is a super place to stay and there's lots to do. If you get the chance go to the Tibetan Refugee Centre.

Room Tip: Stay in the Ada Villa and avoid TVs/telephones and enjoy the peace
