The Darjeeling Tourist Lodge is maintained by WBTDC

The hotel is situated within 5 mins. of Mal Chowrasta, has a nice view of the valleys and tea gardens, The rooms are very large with private balcony
The staffs are very cordial an gentle and the hotel has a old world charm

The food in the restuarant is not very good and a change of colour of the curtains ,carpets is needed as it gives a shabby feeling at first glance

In total it is a very good hotel and gives good value of money.

Room Tip: All the rooms in the Main building is very good. Try Room No 11,15,6 The annexe building has no vi...

Hi,
me and my huby and another couple friends visited Darj on 11th Apr 2013. After lot of deliberation I booked 2 rooms (104 & 105) in the annex building of DTL (Darjeeling Tourist Lodge) since we did not get any vacancy in the main building. It was far better than we heard and assumed.
The wooden floored rooms are fairly cleaned and equipped with TV, Small wardrobe, Dressing Mirror, room heater (which we didn't require though). The bathroom was big & clean, with tiled fitted floor & wall, geyser, big & small mirror and above all uninterrupted water supply even in power cut. There is a long sunny corridor (with Glass window) facing towards the front portion of the Lodge. We were allotted with the 1st floor room which does not have open view from the window (though it was highly required to us). But one can book the 2nd floor room for open view from the window of the rooms.
The lodge has beautiful lone at the back and a big parking area at the front. We found the attenders prompt if you ask anything at the reception desk. They clean the room everyday but do not change the bad sheets. It has a big restaurant & bar inside. Though one can get lunch at later afternoon but having dinner at late evening is difficult. They close taking orders after 6.30pm.
I found the place worth staying and value of money. It is just 5min walking distance from the Mall but at the right time far from noisy roads. entrance is beautiful. The uphill road going The famous Oldest Church on your RHS and Gymkhana Club on your LHS. Another parking area is under construction of them. They have a Entrance Gate and 24hours Security Guard.

Room Tip: Tip for Annex Building only. if you do not have any knee or ankle prob take room at the 2nd floor fo...

I went with my family (Wife & 10 yr old daughter) to stay for 4 nights in this property. The location of the property is one of the best in Darjeeling. If one is staying in the main building, especially in the rooms at the left hand side, you can actually touch Kanchenjunga ( if the weather permits). And the icing on the cake is the large baedroom (as they call it), no. 15 and the room just below it. It is actually a suit with separate sitting, dressing & slipping area as well as a small cozy balcony. At INR 2500/= plus tax, a 400 sq. ft room like that is definitely a steal, especially at that location.

The foods are average, but then we didn't expect something out of this world from a Govt. Tourist lodge (and who needs that with the Glenary's being there). But, no room service after 9 pm and dining hall closing around that time is certainly a big dampner. The employees are friendly but sometimes very reluctant. You have to wait for long before you get your foods served in the dining hall. But, overall, they weren't bad in any way.

having said this, I still rue the fact that a beautiful property like that is not getting the proper attention as it should have been. The upholstery is aged & torn out, the geyser hasn't get proper maintenance for long & the mirror needs an immediate replacement. In a room of that size & decorated with such furniture & upholstery, it is painful to see such worn out condition. The linens were clean and changed regularly though.

Overall a very good experience ....

Room Tip: Try to book the Room no. 15 or the room just below that ...

We stayed in a double bedroom in the main building in March 2013. I will break my experience down in terms of which criterion this place potentially satisfies and which one's it does not. I will speak from my perspective which is as an occupant of a double bedroom in the main building

Strongly satisfies
1. Views of Kanchenchunga : All rooms in the main building have a splendid view of the Kanchenchunga (unless it is enveloped by clouds). My observation of other hotels and their locations suggests that most of the hotels do not have such a view
2. Central location : I cannot think of many hotels which provided a better locational advantage that this. It is situated at a walking distance from both the Zoo and the mall.
3. Insulation from the sounds on the road : Darjeeling is a tourist hotspot with a lot of traffic and little adherence to driving ethics..so it is not unusual to hear of jams and horns etc...Fortunately, this hotel is located a little above the road thereby insulating it from the sound on the road.
4. Value for money : This is a budget hotel and for similar amenities and location, one can expect to pay a premium of at least 50% if not more, as per my understanding.

Somewhat satisfies
1. A decent breakfast : Thats included in the room rent. We had an option of toast with omlette or toast with butter and jam...Toasts were crisp and hot and the breakfast was simple yet well made and served. They serve breakfast in the restaurant from 0730 if I'm not mistaken
2. If one wants to avoid feeling of being cooped up : The building and rooms are spacious, and have a balcony..the bathrooms are spacious as well. The entrance to the hotel has a car park and that lends the feeling of space. In addition it has a garden where one can come down to and gaze at the Kanchenchunga. So in toto, this place has
3. Warm and homely atmosphere and service : the people who served us were quite cordial and made one feel at home in an endearing way. We booked our cab for Tiger Hills through them and the rates were almost at par with the guys outside so that was nice
4. Hot water and heater : Our room had a huge geyser so hot water was always available. In addition, we asked for a heater and were provided one (without any added costs)

Does not satisfy
1. Luxury and pampering : Not happening
2. Ease of service : they don't have an intercom yet (not sure if they are planning to have one in the future) That said, if one does take the trouble of calling them they do respond if within hearing range :) Another negative is that they take orders for dinner around 2 hours before dinner time (so at around 6 pm) and have it ready to be served at around 8pm...so thats not something which makes it easy for the guests..I personally would recommend going out and having dinner (I would recommend Kunga for Tibetan food, and Glenary's for continental)...btw everything closes down in Darjeeling by 2030 so keep that in mind while planning a dinner outdoors
3. Delicious food : Food was quite average..it had a homely touch to it but thats about it
4. Room acoustics : This for me was the biggest negative. We could hear a couple's verbal spat in another room and it was disturbing to say the least. One can hear the sounds of people speaking in the corridoors etc..its not a big bother post 8pm as it is intermittent and definitely better than the sounds from the road

Overall, if one's purpose of coming to Darjeeling is to go around (and not stay indoors and just relax and pamper oneself) and also enjoy a comfortable, but not luxurious stay at a central location, then this place potentially offers that

We have just returned from a 3-night trip at the Darjeeling Tourist Lodge. The location is nice, the rooms are big & spacious and the food,( at least the standard Bengali fare) is tasty, if limited (if you're looking for other cuisines, Glenary's is the place). The problem is with the callous attitude of the staff. We had bookings for a INR 1530/night room in the 1st & 3rd nights of our trip but had managed to get only a room for INR 850 for the 2nd night. We repeatedly offered to upgrade to the more expensive room for the 2nd night, but the staff were not interested: they claimed that bookings could only be done via internet (ha,ha, ha) and could not be changed. The manager was unavailable (but of course!). So in the end, we stayed in room no 7 on the 1st night, shifted to number 25 on the 2nd night and back again to number 7 for the 3rd night--the funniest thing was number 7 was vacant on the night in between! So basically the staff of this Govt-run hotel ensured that the Govt did not get paid extra from tourists who were willing to do so! Their serene callousness probably stems from a feeling of being immune to such parameters as customer service & satisfaction.

Hello friends
We were in darjeeling from 14 to 16th jan 2013. We chose this hotel because of the reviews provided by tourists on tripadvisor. I would like to take this opportunity to tell u all about our experiences in darjeeling
Truely speaking this is a fantastic hotel to stay in darjeeling. Located close to chowrasta this hotel provides great view of mount Kanchanjunga (Most beautiful thing in darjeeling). The rooms are huge, clean , with heater and geyser facility with an attached balcony which though is covered from where the view of the city and valley is great besides kanchanjungha.
Blankets and quilt and other stuffs were very well maintained. Does't look like a govt owned hotel

The drawbacks are
1. service is not very good though the city as such offers you good options for food
2. lots of taxes
3. no telephone in the rooms only call bells.

The best part of Darjeeling as I said was the view of mount kanchanjungha from tiger hills.
We were infact lucky enough to have a clear sunrise in Jan though we were literallly shivering while waiting for the sun to rise. The sunrise is best from open area for which the tickets are rs 20. Though there are lounges which u can use to prevent urself from cold but view is gr from open terrace only

For vegetarians there are not mcuh options in darjeeling especially in winters as the number of tourists are actually less so some of the joints are closed. Hasty Tasty was the best amongst all for us, but u need to wait for the order to come.

Gleanry's is good and worth the visit. cakes are delicious

One should take some time out to sit or stroll at chowrasta during winters especially with bright sun. It really feels very pleasant.

Do take some pics of darjeeling station and toy train even if u do not ride on it. Its beautiful.

The Zoo is good well maintained and RED PANDAS are lovely

Room Tip: The room no 14 in the main building is great if u can get that. Otherwise the others rooms are also...

In first week of September, 2012, I have visited Darjeeling with my family and stayed at Darjeeling Tourist Lodge. After several conversations with the person from West Bengal tourism office, we have finally made the booking through WB tourism website. The Tourist Lodge is actually situated next to Darjeeling gymkhana club and in 5 min walking distance from Mall. We have got our accommodation in two adjacent rooms on 1st floor. The rooms are spacious, clean and have 24 hrs. hot water supply. This is one of the specialty lodgings in Darjeeling and absolutely value for money. The lodge has a restaurant at ground floor and supplies good Bengali dishes. Although, this is the area where more improvements can be made.

Although, best part is you can get a full view of Kanchenjunga range from the balcony itself. I did not believe the words from the officials and hotel stuffs until I woke up 5:30 am in the morning in very next day when we have reached. I left the bed, opened the door and to my utter surprise, the beautiful Kanchenjunga is right in front of me. The entire range was visible for next 3 hrs. and eventually faded away with the time passes. On a clear sky, the view from the hotel can be compared with Tiger Hill. According to my parents, even this is better because you can grab your coffee and sit idle while enjoying the beauty from your balcony.

Room Tip: If I can remember correctly, we have stayed room no. 7 and 8 on 1st floor. These rooms are having fu...
