The Shangri-la is housed in an older building on the Mall. Now, being on the mall means that it is noisy up to about 9 pm when the shops close and the shoppers leave the area. That being said, the Shangri-la was a good choice for the busy, large town of Darjeeling. It is a lively place, close to the Chowstra ( the main square) and great for exploring the town. We walked for hours, up and down the busy streets , enjoying the local scene.
It was cold and damp while we were there and we were provided with a heater ( at no additional cost) which was really quite ineffectual to heat the room, unless we were right next ot it. Our room was really like a suite with a seperate sitting area, a large closet, vaulted wooden ceilings, and work desk, an ample bath, wooden floors and lovely views out to the hills. The large bed was very comfortable. It was moderately priced.
A good choice in this busy town !
