“Give it a miss...”
Reviewed June 12, 2013

We were 3 couples who stayed at this place in our final leg of the journey to Sikkim and Darjeeling. Overall the stay was a mixed one - neither good nor bad.. yea but could have been made much better by the management (guess the owner only looks after the hotel)

Rooms - Rooms were clean, sufficiently large and modern bathroom. The bed had electrical heating attached to it.. Geyser capacity was definitely not up to the mark..

Food - Food was good and homely. However, the major problem is the hotel does not have a running restaurant. It does not or will not arrange for you and food items except for what has been chosen at the time of booking.

Service - Service during day time (8 a.m. to 8 p.m. ) was good. However, there was no service after 8 !!! yes, no service after 8.30-9... The owner has hired only young college graduates who are at the Hotel only during day time.. All 6 of us felt that the hotel is run like a college hostel with the Hotel Manager/ Owner as the strict warden.. Guests can not have dinner after 8, they can not have breakfast before 7.30.. Since there was some trouble with the lights in the near by areas the hotel had to run on a generator only. Unlike other hotels, we could not run geysers on the generator.. We did not know that the hotel does not have a running restaurant.. When we reached this place it was around 4.30 p.m. and we were very hungry.. When we wanted to order some snacks we were told that it does not have a running restaurant and they were not even willing to arrange something from outside.. In spite of the limited guests, the owner/manager was not willing to offer any flexibility in food menu in spite of knowing the fact that we had almost similar stuff in last 10 days.. The hotel is like a hunted house after 9 and you can not reach out to any one even in case of medical emergency..

Would not recommend this place on account of the above reasons in spite of good rooms and location...

We had booked 2 nights here for our stay in Darjeeling and that this was the last stay before our return from Sikkim to Mumbai.

Prior to this we had spend 2 nights at Hotel Amarjeet in Kurseong (30 kms away from Darjeeling). As compared to the the stay in Kurseong area, the location was excellent. A little posh, peaceful, very near to Chowrasta Market of Darjeeling, nice restaurants surrounding the area, very less traffic, Good view from the roads on the valley etc. The property is a decent looking white building. The reception is a small and overall it gave us a feeling that the building may have been a private bungalow ...now converted into a hotel.

Our check in was fast. We were served Darjeeling tea as a welcome drink. It had a very different taste as compared to the typical gujarati tea that we are accustomed of drinking.

We were given 2 adjoining rooms on the 2nd floor. The rooms were slightly compact but nice. Very warm and cozy, panelled with wood all round. The floor carpet definitely needed some proper wash cum cleaning.... but did not have a smell and hence did not create any issues.

The view from the 2nd floor was good. During our stay it was raining and we were partners with the rain clouds whenever we looked from the window.

The bed was very cozy and comfortable. As similar to all Sikkim hotels we stayed in, the rooms were devoid of fans. The only difference was that they had provided electric blankets as compared multilayer heavy blankets provided in the hotels in Sikkim. A good change. Sleep quality was good.

Bathroom was nice and clean. 24 hours running hot water - as mentioned on the website - was a little tall claim. Hot water did run in the mornings!

We had reached around 12 noon and inquired about the restaurant menu. To our surprise we were informed that the restaurant prepares food only for guest who have taken the AP or MAP plan .... and that too a very fixed menu. For other guests, even with all extra paying options, the restaurant is defunct! This meant that for afternoon snacks either a guest has to bring something from outside and eat.... or go out and eat! The restaurant was not in a position even to offer coffee or hot chocolate. All it served was Darjeeling tea! Now this was a BIG letdown. Thus we had to go outdoor to different restaurants 3 times a day for meals and afternoon snacks. I do appreciate the help of the staff who ....for one night....helped get parcel food from a nearby restaurant! But then the room service was not equipped for giving plates, spoons etc! There was no centre tipoy in the rooms to enable us to sit down and have food! We ultimately had food like how you have it while camping!

Staff is very cooperative and helpful.

I do have to quote that the location did help overcome this issue in some way. There are restaurants at a distance of 10 minutes walking! Yet...... we gujaratis have peculiar habits and when we are told NO for hot freshly prepared snacks in the afternoon........Cannot accept!

Overall the stay was good and enjoying. Hope the hotel management overcomes this one limitation!

We read the reviews on TripAdvisor and booked the hotel. Its in a nice quiet location - neither too far nor too close to the bustling mall road. Its a very old colonial kinda bungalow, large airy rooms and very well maintained. The only thing i really didnt like about the rooms were the carpets - which though appeared clean, looked overdue for replacement. Bathrooms are clean and good size. We stayed in the rooms on the first floor.

I can imagine the views must be great since it overlooks the mountain part of the town, but as luck would have it, Darjeeling was soaked in clouds during our stay and hence the very reason we chose this hotel went waste.

Breakfast is just about average. They do not have a restaurant, but a dining room which caters to in house guests, depending on prior orders. we just had breakfast there on 2 days.

Mr Justin who is in the front office was extremely helpful with the stuff around. My special thanks to him, for having helped in locating a lost backpack with a ipod in it, and helping couriering the same back to Bangalore a week after our return. Though the bag was flicked in another hotel (Rhoddendron), he helped tremendously in getting the same back from the cabbie who had flicked it. Mr Justin, thanks once again !

Overall, we wish we stayed in this hotel longer than we did.

Room Tip: Try and pick the rooms on the first floor - we stayed in room 4 an 5.

We stayed for 2 nights in this hotel on our honeymoon trip. When asked for a room with a view, they told me that every room has the same view and was offered a room in the ground floor. Was disappointed when I opened the window for the 'View', I could only see the road running below and the near by building thats undergoing some repair works. I could hear voices from that building even during late nights which made me really uncomfortable.

Break fast was decent enough. Aloo paratha was so soft that it melted in my mouth. on the second day they even brought the breakfast to my room. Serivce offered is worth mentioning.

Located some 1.5 kms away from the bazar on a steep road that becomes deserted after 7 PM. So if you are planning to go for dinner after 7, better hurry.

Electronic heating bed was a surprise.

Bathroom was modern with glass doors and stuff. Cleanliness can be improved a lot as I could see some strains in the bedspread.

Overall an above average place.

Room Tip: Avoid rooms in ground floor.

Good family run hotel. Nice clear view of kanchanjunga from the room window. Very good breakfast, but alas, no lunch or dinner. Apparently there is a plan that includes lunch and dinner as well but I couldnt find that on cleartrip. Courteous staff. Overall, a comfortable stay.

I would start this review by praising the owner (Mr. Monlom) who was extremely helpful.

We had to leave early due to some issue in Darjeeling and he readily arranged a cab @ 8 in night. He even offered us to pay later as his card machine was not working. Hard to imagine such trust for people whom you don't know at all.

We met his wife as well. A nice smiling and helpful couple.

Now coming to Hotel and Service.

Place - Great location, 10 mins walk from chowrasta, not much taxis/traffic noise. Nice clean building facade compared to other so called premium options on this road.

Food - Limited options but nice homely non spicy food. We enjoyed the food.

Rooms - Its a small hotel with only 10 rooms. We stayed in attic room (2nd floor rooms) and stay was great. Clean room and toilets, comfortable bed (electrically heated- comes really handy). Room offers good view of hills and have wooden flooring, glass shower area.

However, shower cabin glass and toilet seat are very close and might cause some issue to healthy people.

Service - I would say we experienced innocent hospitality. Polite and ready to serve staff but lacks professional fine tuning. A little training would do wonders to these nice people.

Summing up - A great small place run by genuine nice people..

Room Tip: Choose Attic Rooms - 2nd floor rooms room no - 8 (no lifts though). These offer good views and have...
