A good view of the elusive snow leopards in captivity. The Royal Bengal Tiger in this zoo is a paradox, away from its habitat in the marshy and humid Sunderbandh.

Good place to visit at a hill station.. Zoo is clean, well maintained.. at no place there was foul smell of dung of animal (common at other zoos).. Good collection of animals.. easy to see..
Added to the zoo is the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute.. that too is worth a visit..
This zoo is never to be missed if you r with children..

HMI & PNHZP are located, inside a common campus, at walk-able distance (~2 km) from Chowrasta/ Mall area of Darjeeling. HMI is a must for trekking Enthusiasts. This Institute was founded by Jawaharlal Nehru and was initially headed by Tenzing Norgay. It runs different course like adventure, basic and advanced courses of Mountaineering. HMI Museum gives great insight into early Indian and British expedition to Mt. Everest. PNHZP houses some exotic breeds of high altitude fauna such as Siberian Tigers, Royal Bengal Tiger, Black Bear, Red Pandas, Himalayan Goats & Sheep, Yak, Clouded Leopard, Black Leopard, and the elusive Snow Leopards and many colourful Himalayan birds. It takes around 3 hours to cover everything. Closing time of the Zoo is 4:30 pm. Combined Entry Fees to HMI & PNHZP is 60 rupees.

I don't like the idea of enclosed zoos but ended up outside gates with some time to spare. Although the compounds are reasonably large the sight of big cats endlessly pacing the perimeter fence was distressing. Animals appeared to be kept clean and well fed and watered but confined space restrictions for such a wonderful animals cannot be changed. Having said that the zoo is a good area to walk around and a good place to meet people of many different nationalities.
