This Restaurant in the Raintree Hotel on St. Mary's Road, RA Puram is a hidden gem in Chennai for a different Chinese dining experience. Overshadowed by the more popular Above the Sea rooftop Restaurant in the same Hotel, and situated in the basement, it is well worth a visit. It has around 50 covers in 3 separate sections, the best one being right in front of the see-through kitchen.
It has both a la carte & make-your-own stir-fried dish options in Cantonese cuisine. Though the menu card had some interesting appetisers like 'Shrimps with Chestnut Gold Coins' & 'Wok-tossed Dry Squid' & mains like 'Wok-Tossed Rock Lobster' &' Whole Mud Crab', we settled for the even more interesting 'Make Your Own' option. We could choose from a variety of vegetables & meats to add to the noodles or rice in a big bowl, then hand our selections ove r to the waiting Chefs behind the glass to stir-fry & serve at our table.
The ingredients were fresh, quantities unlimited, & the servings invariably too large to finish !
There was a selection of sauces to add to taste. You do get an additional thrill of having made your own dish, & it was all so tasty !
Most of us skipped dessert, as it was too filling a meal, but I just could not resist ordering a twist on my favourite - a 'Litchie & Ginger-poached Asian Pear with Vanilla Yoghurt', which was quite delicious !
Not having a licence to serve alcohol, they could offer a selection of different Chinese Teas to complement the meal. Prices are somewhat high, but considering the 5* location & wide choice of fresh food items, does not put you off too much.
Highly recommended for a different & satisfying Chinese Dining experience.
