I planned a stay in this hotel. I asked for an airport pick up.I mailed these people and confirmed it. But when i reached airport with the baby no beggars from the hotel was there. I called over phone and no one replied.
Please dont stay in this hotel any more. Very bad staff response.

HOTEL SHELTER is an exclusive three star hotel in the heart of Chennai. This inimitable hotel in Mylapore, the heritage centre of Chennai, is in close proximity to the ever stupefying Marina beach.

The Hotel pride in capacious, comfortable air- conditioned rooms, hygienic, tasty multi- cuisine restaurants, a well- endorsed bar, secure, round the clock communication networks, well planned banquet halls, etc.

The Hotel offer to enthrall you with the best south Indian hospitality in perfect luxury.

Mediocre

48 year old with a luxury budget, traveling for leisure

The high tourist season between Christmas and New Year has mistakenly lulled the owners of this hotel to believe they can charge very high rates for what they have on offer. We paid 3,000 Indian Rupees (or $80 U.S.) for our first night’s stay in this east coast city as we had trouble finding anything reasonable.

The first room we were shown had large patches of mold on the ceiling and the smell of rot and old smoke was overpowering. The second room we were shown was better although the smell of mold was still present. The room was in need of a good cleaning as well as some new paint.

The most annoying thing about this hotel, more than the noisy street and poor neighborhood, the lamp without an electrical plug, and the tepid-water shower was the unwanted early morning wake-up call by the laundry service asking whether we had dirty clothes for him! The noisy street made it impossible to return to sleep.

The lobby of the hotel is the only area that looks modernized while the other public spaces, including the elevators and restaurants sent visitors back several decades with old furniture and décor and dirt while providing a smell that only mold can provide.

I've been staying at this hotel on and off for about 5 years now. This time, the decrease in quality and maintenance standards was pathetic to say the least. And this when I see the room tarriff increasing steadily.
Rooms have been made up nicely, but not maintained at all. All our rooms were exceptionally dirty with unclean toilet bowls (anti-bacterial cleanliness standards, HAHA!)

We ordered a beer one night; the beer came in a good 30 mins; long after we had finished all the food and starters. To top it, the glasses were dirty with hair floating on the beer. We called the receptionist and he says 'Sometimes it happens'. That was the icing on the cake.

Even the buffet breakfast which used to be awesome has fallen in standards now.

All in all, a pathetic, avoidable hotel at this price. Get better places at less than half the price you will end up paying here. Avoid taking shelter here!

The room was dirty. The walls were filthy: it had black stains and worst of all had nose droppings stuck to the wall. The bedsheets had several red stains (probably due to betel leaf juice) The room was too cramped for double occupancy. The bathroom floor was ok. The toilet bowl was dirty. On the whole my stay for the night was bad. One could get better hotels for the same price. I would not recommend this hotel.

I booked this hotel through travelguru, as Shelter's website doesn't seem to work. We loved the Shelter and will stay here again! It is one of the best hotels in Chennai for under $50. Their veggie restaurant is better in quality than their non-veg, however there is a Saravana Bhavan very close by. Shelter is located in a nice neighborhood in Mylapore, very close to Kapaleeshwarar temple. They also offer airport pickup and dropoff. Shelter seems to cater more to foreign tours and indian businesses. Expect a lot of westerners in search of instant salvation!! Pluses: Great value for the money, good customer service, comfortable rooms. Minuses: Decor could be more tasteful to get rid of the institutional feel.

  • Liked — Great value for money at a wonderful location
  • Disliked — Decor
