New Woodlands Hotel
Ranked #59 of 400 Hotels in Chennai (Madras)
Reviewed March 21, 2008

I stayed twice there in the autumn of 2006. The first time - due to overbooking - they offered me only a standard room (non-a/c), which was ok for one night, but not more.

When I returned after three weeks, I had a executive room, which was very good.

The only minus is that the Hotel does not have a taxi service itself. A private business man runs a taxi rent there, but it's quite costy. And if you try to stop a motor rikshaw or a taxi outside, they also ask quite a high price from you.

Warning! Don’t even think about New Woodlands hotel in Delhi: Overcharging for rooms of bad quality with stone hard beds, ants on the floor, malfunctioning shower and TV. Breakfast is poor and customer service is rude. On top of that the manager wanted us to pay in advance. I travel all over the world and this is one of my worst hotel experiences.

I have just come back from the New Woodlands Hotel.
Unlike some of the other reviews I enjoyed the hotel.
The rooms a clean the restaurants was great.

Some people have said the staff are rude. But you would be surpised what a smile and a hello can do.
This hotel caters to Indian guests. So if you expect things just things to be just like north american or european hotels it might not be the place for you. But if you want an real Indian experience then it might be the place for you
marina beach is about a 25 min walk
citi centre mall about 20 min walk
spencers plaza about 45 min walk
there are several atms near by
also a super market half block away
iwave inter cafe about 10 min walk
I plan on going back next October

This is a very large hotel popular with Indian wedding parties and other groups; it also has a fair sprinkling of Western tourists. The rooms are carpetless, clean with good shower but smelling of disinfectant and/or moth balls. It has three different restaurants as well as an outside fast food court. Recommended but note that it is not walkably near anything of any interest. We found the rickshaw drivers of Chennai to be more irritating than Delhi's, which is saying something.

I got a big clean a/c double room for the price(ca.1350 Rs). The facilities worked well, but the battery of TV remort controll was out.

But the staff was very rude, that disspointed me very much. They like to say "sir" after any word, but pay no respect. They seem to hate to work for the guests. It seemed that this is a common atmospehre of this hotel. You perceive this kind of "flabbieness" on any corner in this hotel.
The strange diposit system, on which guests must pay much more summs than the required room tariff and get afterwards the difference refund back "in cash". An another strange system: you must call the reception 30 minutes before checking out to let them inspect the roomto check if you broke facilities or not. It means you must stay in the room already 30 minutes before the check-out.

A positiv thing is that they have a good restaurant where you can get good authntic food for a reasonable price (though almost all staff was rude).

So, if you could tolerate the rudeness of the staff and the strange system it could be a good choice for a middle-class hotel in Chennai.

Over the past couple of years we have stayed in perhaps 30 different hotels in India. The New Woodlands was easily the worst. We arrived at the hotel in the late evening after a 7 hour train ride to be greeted by the rudest desk staff I've ever encountered. Our rooms were more like cells, with concrete walls and bars (but no screens) on the windows. In the morning, we were covered with mosquito bites. If you're travelling in India on a budget you can do much much better than this hotel.

A small group of us stayed at the New Woodlands in October 2005. We booked deluxe rooms for the princely sum of about $30 per night and got a huge room, spotlessly clean, with TV, A/c and phone. The hotel has an outdoor pool, but women are definitely a rarity in it. Food in the restaurant is vegetarian, and outstanding, especially the breakfast Idli and curds.

This is not a 'western' luxury hotel, for that you need to go to the Taj Coromandel or Connemara, but the service is good and the rooms bug free and very clean. Taxis and rickshaws are always on hand to take you anywhere you want to go. Make sure to bargain and agree a price with the rickshaw drivers, as prices can vary a lot!

The onsite ayurvedic massage and the head massage are absolute MUSTS. The beauty shop is very unpreposessing, in fact quite dingy, but the service is first class.
