Place is located in the outskirts of the citi. The public transport to reach this place is really good

One can easily spend 5-6 hours in the zoo, however please watch out for Chennai hot climate. You can also take a batter car to move around in the zoo to avoid tanning in the sun

If you have leisure time you can visit this place, best time to visit this place is between Nov-Jan of the year

This is one of the best zoological parks in India. Before planning a visit, make sure atleast 4-5 hours are kept aside to completely enjoy the full zoo since this is really vast. There is an entrance fee of Rs. 30 per head, Rs. 25 for still camera. Car parking fee is Rs. 20 and ample space is available for parking. Once inside, there are different options to roam around. One is to walk around the zoo which should be done at a slow and relaxed pace, since you have to walk a lot. Other option is to hire a bicycle, which they have many and costs just Rs.10 per hour and which I consider the best option, if you don't have small kids. Other alternative is to take an open electric van, which costs Rs. 30 per head. It will take you around the zoo in one hour. If you want to travel inside alone with your family, you can book the full electric van for Rs.330. Now regarding the inmates, the zoo has a very good collection of animals and birds. A wide variety of monkeys and birds are there besides other animals. Kids and adults alike will enjoy the place. Make sure to carry sufficient drinking water with you. Some snack bars are there inside, but the menu is extremely limited or there may be nothing of your choice at all. Weekends are bit crowded and noisy, so a weekday is better to visit the zoo.

Had not been to Vandalur part of Chennai earlier although reaching there from Chennai Park railway station was a breeze (Direct Train).

Anyhow, this zoo is very very clean with all the trails and areas being clearly marked. Additionally they had bicycles for hire, and which unlike many other similar places, were in Mint condition. I mean, even the gears were working and if someone complained, the staff (guess this service was sponsored by BSA cycles) were only happy to change yours. And the best part....it was only about Rs. 10/- per hour or so!!!

Animals were being well looked after and area was regularly cleaned and conserved. Even the ticket checking staff was aware that no food should be taken inside (it definitely induces visitors to feed animals!!)

Overall, one of the better zoos of INDIA.

Visited this zoo on 02nd Feb 2014 along with my kids. The whole idea is to engage the kids on a holiday. The purpose is served. But the following aspects that needs improvement.

1) No outside food is allowed in the zoo. You may have to depend on the food outlets available in the zoo. But then, I am concerned about the quality. Cheap money and cheap stuff. Food outlets were not maintained clean. They have sufficient outlets to cater the crowd.
2) I did not find volunteers or they are not visible in the zoo for any kind enquiry and assistance. Nobdy was there to control the exited kids shouting and screaming on the top of the voice, particularly I should say, while visiting caged animals, birds reptiles or that are confined to a room or block.
3) Battery operated vechicles can be hired to take a round of the zoo. Due to the limited number of vehicles, the drives constantly inject a sense of urgency insisting the visitors return to the vehicle soon. Probably, one may not enjoy this. I would suggest to walk and explore or hire a bicycle.

4) Unacceptable - pathetic bathroom / toilet facilities in the zoo.

Try visiting once but not in summer!!

Good collection, Clean, cheap and HUGE. This is surely is one of the better Zoo in India. Cannot compare it to Zoos outside India, but surely its not a time waste. However few things that needs to improve is more Food areas, better quality of food, better Toilets and better parking facility. We went on 26th Jan, and found a lot of people there, however since the ZOO is huge you dont feel its crowded. For people who cannot or do not want to explore the Zoo on foot, can take a battery operated car drive around Zoo. Its Rs 30 per person and the car takes you around Zoo stopping at few important locations. Its a 45 min ride, but you see most of things worth seeing. I was with my 9 month old daughter, so I found it worth it. We also took a Lion Safari, which also cost Rs 30 per person. However since I have been to South Africa and have explored the game reserves there, I didnt find Lion safari worth it. But all said and done its worth 3-4 hrs, if you have nothing to do and just want to explore new place in Chennai. Avoid during summers, although the tree cover is quite nice.
