A new luxurious property in Mylapore at Adyar Seaface. Very luxurious but the service is not yet joined together, although this new hotel at the end of the Marina Beach is one of the most luxurious hotels of India.
We booked a junior suite and were upgraded to a luxury Suite.
The suite was enormous, with as much floor space as most people’s houses. It was a truly splendid apartment with sea-facing rooms looking out in two directions from the seventh floor. The appointments were, like the style of decoration of the hotel itself, a mixture of everything lavish. The scope of the style of the furnishings seems to be of the utmost high quality. Whether it is to your taste or not, it is extraordinarily well done and consistently carried out. It is an ostentatious mix of large cut-glass mirrors, contemporary art, staggeringly opulent flower arrangements, and a modern take on traditional Indian craft work.
Great play was made of the fact that we had a butler for the suite. He appeared at check-in and check-out. We had problems with the air-conditioning. Nobody had showed us how to adjust it. We had to call up a technician at 2 a.m. to find how to cool the room. The air-con was faulty. He had to take out and change the control board in the air conditioning in the ceiling of the dressing room. Understandable in such a new property. Incidentally, the telephone system seemed unnecessarily complicated and the instructions didn’t help much. We felt somebody (the butler?) should have come to us on one of the following days to check that the problem with the air-con had been solved.
We didn’t find the two formal restaurants especially appealing for meals, though they looked superb.
We used the Lobby Lounge dining areas during our stay. Service was haphazard on both occasions we had dinner there. The food was good but jolly expensive. We thought that it needed one good focused Maitre-d. There were, we thought, rather too many people in black suits working in the restaurant who seemed more concerned to supervise the junior staff, than attend to the diners. We were disappointed that the hotel didn’t offer any of the excellent Indian wines. That is due to Tamil Nadu Government policy not the hotel but it is regrettable. The wines we had on the two occasions we dined there, appeared on the bill at different prices – a difference of some thousand rupees. One bill charged us for the bottle and the other, oddly enough, though exactly the same wine and service, was charged by the glass.
This may seem to be carping criticism of a hotel of such luxurious quality and all the niggles are probably due to its newness. It’s not quite settled in, we thought, and hasn’t yet attained the faultlessly smooth running achieved by the best luxury Indian hotels.
