Owner description: Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

“A must see church”
Reviewed April 17, 2014

A beautiful church with enormous historical significance. Located near the lighthouse at the southern end of the main Marina Beach the pristine white Church is an architectural marvel. Once one is inside the church a sense of calm and peace pervades the senses. For Christians it is a must see church associated as it is with St Thomas , one of the Apostles of Jesus Christ.

“Santhome church.”
Reviewed April 16, 2014

What I like in this sprawling complex is the peace and serenity that prevail. Like ANY CHURCH, THE CLEANLINESS is remarkable. Plenty of open space around the church for ample parking. I visit this church ( though am a Hindu) very often during my morning walks and spend a quiet time and enjoy the peace. Clenliness is next to Godliness is very apat for this church. V. HariHaran.

“Peaceful place”
Reviewed April 16, 2014

There are a few things I like about churches. You can enter wearing shoes, people prefer silence when the mass is not going on and the cleanliness. San Thome church as all these qualities and also boasts of a library and an exhibition. Overall, an excellent place to visit, even if you are not religious.

“Beautiful architecture”

Tucked away on Beach road the church offers us a glimpse of our recent past when the Britishers were in India, the church is aesthetically built and a delight for anyone interetsed in architecture and design. A must see.

“Architectural marvel”
Reviewed March 8, 2014 via mobile

It is a beautiful church on the sea shore of Santhome in Chennai (Madras). It is regularly visited by Christians from far & wide. From a tourists point of view it is an architectural marvel and during Christmas & New year it is specially decorated with colourful lights and it is a feast for the eyes. Watching Christian weddings performed in this historical church, with bride in long flowing white dress and the groom in his best suit and the invitees in bright colours and the sermons performed therein is an attraction in itself, not to be missed. The sea is behind the Church and that can also be visited to enjoy sea breeze. The place is easily accessible, as it is in a busy area near Mylapore, another place of importance for the tourist. There are some good Restaurants around the area to take care of your hunger. It will be nice to spend your evening here & carry its memories.
