Owner description: Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

“Must visit in chennai”
Reviewed February 7, 2014

This cathedral where the holy remnants of St. Thomas are preserved is a must visit place in chennai. The ancient but renovated cathedral is indeed a beauty to see. Car parking is available inside the church compound. There is a shop inside where devotional books and like stuffs an be purchased.

“Just a church”
Reviewed February 4, 2014

Its just a church. The European church are most impressive and rich. Visit it only if you have time and if you want to know that this is one of three church that have a tomb with mortal remains from an Apostle.

“A very beautiful church”
Reviewed January 23, 2014

Very beautiful church. I went for the Saturday 6 am morning mass and it was quite packed. I enjoyed the ambience and the atmosphere inside the church.

The architecture is very interesting and very pretty.

I went to St Thomas' tomb as well but unfortunately we could not take photos inside. Worth the visit, though.
