Owner description: Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

St. Thomes Bascillica is a holy pilgrimage for Christians in India which is built in Mylapore, Chennai. It was built by british in 1893. It holds a museum and church. People believe that the pole behind the church, which was left there by St. Thomas, is very powerful and was able to stop the Tsunami which affected many part of the world. Chennai was safe because of this pole.

A must visit place

This is nice and near the Temple and makes a great comparison, both very spiritual The whiteness of the building against the blue sky makes for some wonderful photos. There were services going on which was a good to see and it is very welcoming. I got charged to light a candle which I don't think was strictly above board, though it was a nice experience.

During my visit to Chennai I didn't expect to find this important Christian building in the middle of the Hindu world, it was a nice surprise and to be honest I didn't know it is an important location for pilgrims. This place is very important coz is where rest the body of Saint Thomas, one of the Jesus disciple, who after the crucifixion migrated to India to expand the message of his Master. Apparently he was murdered for local people when he was doing his job.
The basilica is a big complex with a main church, museum, book shop and also u can visit the Saint Thomas's crypt located under the museum, u will need to remove your shoes to go there but don't worry there is some lockers for free where u can leave your shoes. Sometimes where is located the body (u will see just a nice sculpture of the saint) they celebrate mass and in the entrance of the crypt u will be able to buy some cards or post cards and also sacred earth from the crypt.
