Owner description: Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

Nice layout where the tomb is below ground with a separate entrance behind the church. Dont miss visiting the Stick placed by the saint at the back of the church. The story attached to it is amazing.

The painting of St. Thomas touching Jesus seems so realistic when one stands in front of the wall.

Though I've visited to this place with my friends group I must say it would be one of the most romantic places in Chennai. It's in top of a hill, from where we can have a scenic view of the near by places. Evening is the best time to visit. Atmosphere is very pleasant.

Even though it is small it is a great reminder for all Westerners that disciples of Jesus were in India 1400 years before anyone from Europe was in North America.

Situated in Santhome, just adjacent to Marina Beach, and the junction to Mylapore, this church is worthy of a detour, even if you are not religious. It stands tall and aloof over the surrounding area, and is surrounded by grounds that offer a bit of peace from the hustle and bustle of the city. The church is considered a Basilica (archbishop in attendance) and is special mainly because of the presence of the crypt (underneath the museum which is behind the church) purportedly containing the tomb of one of Jesus' original apostles, Saint Thomas. The Church has some lovely stained glass windows, and very old tombs on the floor of the church. Entrance to the church, crypt and museum is free, although, as in all religious temples and churches, you are required to remove your footwear before entering.

Would recommend everyone to visit this church atleast once.

Its beautiful and the paintings inside the church are breath taking.. it looks like we are in rome or somewhere when we are inside the church, me and my wife like to spend sometime here whenever we are bored with busy life...

and the best part is that it has a museum too.
