Owner description: Probably the most magnificent and prominent reminder of Chennai's colonial lineage, the San Thome Church bears a colossal amount of history since A.D. 52, the year when St. Thomas traveled to India, though the Roman Catholic basilica was built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. It was then rebuilt by the British in 1893. The imposing structure reaches a height of 155 feet and emanates peace and architectural splendor with its tall spires over the tomb of the saint. The sea makes a wonderful backdrop to the pristine white structure. The San Thome Church is considered one of the pilgrimages for people around the world.

An early church with an active current congregation - we saw Pongal festivities happening as we visited.

The tomb of St. Thomas the Apostle is really not ornate or anything, it's just that it's so unique in it's place in Christianity. I don't know how non-Christians might rate this place, but if you ARE Christian, you really are getting a window to the past. It is totally worth the effort to go there and just learn about the place.

This is about WHAT it is... the church is pleasant but not fabulous and the crypt is nothing unique either in terms of style. It's only about what it IS!

Santhome church is one of the rare church in world where you can found the tomb inside it. Well managed church this is. It is in the heart of the city and have nice connectivity and just near to Marina beach. We liked this church and it's atmosphere.

Prayerful atmosphere, clean and attractive. The museum is good and gives useful information. There are always plenty of pilgrims who may require rooms for some rest. There are too many expploiting the religious sentiments of visitors. selling sand as something religious ! Rest rooms facilitiy is not good enough.
