Owner description: This expansive beach is Chennai's most famous tourist attraction, though the undercurrent is too strong for all but the strongest swimmers. Look out for the "Kannagi" statue on Marina Beach, which tells the story of the legendary character from a South Indian epic.

Marina Beach is supposed to be the 2nd longest beach in the world. And it is quite beautiful. But it is very crowded particularly in the evenings. Gone are the days when we had political and religious meetings. But the shanty shops that sell snacks are a bane now. I long for the days of the thenga-manga-pattani-sundal.

Visiting the marina beach in different time of the day will create different and enjoyable experiences. may not be that clean but with the number of people visiting it every day, it is understandable. o not miss to watch the sun rise and sun set from the beach - though sun set is not visible as in the west coast, one need to see the reflection of the sea at that time. Beware of eating food items if you are so hygiene-conscious, but occasionally one need to venture into eating the "bajji's particularly the chilli bajji,

Its a lovely beach, long stretch, but sadly its over crowded, dirty and unkempt. Going to the beach on weekends and evenings is quite stressful. Best time is at dawn, when hawkers have not yet set up their stalls, but you will have to wade through the litter from the previous evening.

The Marina beach road is a lovely stretch walk, especially during dawn/dusk, watching the sun etc. But its too crowded and you can't really enjoy the beach/waves amidst all the chaos.
