“Not Taj...”
Reviewed October 16, 2012

Sheer dissappointment ! Staff however was as good as any other taj property but the property is indeed in tatters...with leaking roofs and seeping walls. The least that could have been done was to do some maintenance... Heritage property can be the ruse but I have stayed in other taj heritage properties and this one does fall in that league...infact taj is risking it's repute by tagging its name to this property....Cleanliness was a concern everywhere be it the rooms or the pool area.... We were given a room which was smitten with dust . On the brighter side food was excellent & staff living up to the Taj legacy rest all the less spoken is better!!!

Although rated as a heritage hotel associated with the Raj, you really would not know it, save for the elegant and delightful foyer area. This is very much a business hotel - not really suitable for us as a group of UK tourists, with no grounds except the small area around a functional pool. During our 2 days here I felt a little uncomfortable with staff several times, the only time in a two week tour that I felt that we were slightly down-market for their customer preferences!

Our room was first floor (101), larger than most but with a poor view over car park and road, and smelled stale (?damp) - this was being covered by a fumigator, and I should really have asked to move but was too tired after the travelling. It was also pretty noisy despite double glazing, and the soft fittings were not totally clean. Bed fine though, and a nice large and very well equipped older style bathroom. Had to ask for the promised fruit - slightly disappointing in a mainline Taj hotel.

Restaurant delightful with pool view. Staff very efficient rather than friendly. Buffet food in main restaurant (?Verandah) was excellent/very good both nights, and the breakfasts also very good. Lunch was enjoyable and reasonably priced, eating half-portions of pasta that were top class. Hotel shop sensible and chatty manager.

The area around is pretty awful - crowded, dirty and congested. The metro works make the city a nightmare for traffic. Cannot walk anywhere except round the corner to a good shopping mall. Went to Government Museum (see reviews) and was ripped off by a taxi summoned by the hotel door man - not great Taj.

This may be a high star rated hotel but is nowhere near the class of the superb Taj Malabar at Cochin, on any count at all. But then, its for business users really. Given the TA choice between rating this as "Average" or "Very Good", it has to be the latter, but in fact that is rather generous.

Everything about the hotel says luxury, from the elegant foyer to the beautiful bedrooms. You could have a wonderful holiday and never leave the hotel.
The food is as good as you would expect from a Taj hotel, though we found the Raintree Restaurant an expensive experience (there are another two you can choose from!). The staff very efficient and helpful. We gave our room number the first time, but after that we were recognised, even though they were busy.
The pool is a good size and glorious to swim and cool off in.
The hotel is fairly central but the roadworks for the new metro made any moving around Chennai a nightmare. We'll have to go back next year and see how things have improved!

Room Tip: ll the rooms are good, and the lift is there if you don't want to work of your dinner walking up...

I was at this Taj hotel for a day to attend a conference. The rooms are excellently furnished and the staff very helpful. The check in was quick, smooth and without a glitch. They also kindly arranged a conference room for me in their business centre at very short notice for a 2 hr meeting. The food was quite good and there was a good variety of dishes in the buffet which was served for the conference delegates. I had to check out very early at 4 am to catch a flight and the front desk did the checkout very quickly. All in all a pleasant experience.

Although the hotel is located in the heart of the city & is very heritage structure itself, the overall feel of the Taj, wasn't evident here. Ambience & food are good. But it lacks basis services. Maybe when i stayed it was overflowing with guests henc ecouldnt take care of each one. But overall the hotel is centrally located, not far from the airport, food is good.

We arrived the hotel very late at night after a long drive from Bangalore, and with three sleepy children in tow were not looking forward to the usual check in formality. But we were lucky to have been welcomed by the accommodations manager, Mr. Ashirbad, who knew exactly how to make everyone smile. Our kids each got a small toy to occupy themselves with and within less than 10 minutes we were able to complete our check in and order room service for dinner and breakfast for the next morning. Their breakfast is from 7 but because we had to leave the hotel at 7 the next day Mr. Ashirbad made sure that our breakfast would be served in the room at 6. And at 6 o'clock sharp we heard a knock on the door, "Good morning. Room service!"

We stayed in a very spacious and comfortable room on the ground floor with direct access to the pool, which has colonial charm. The room could benefit from some renovation but it was well maintained and immaculately clean. All in all, great service, spacious room, good food and convenient location.
