The Taj Coromandel is a delightful property, located in Nungambakkam which is the heart of the city and the commercial centre, and one of Chennai’s best-known landmarks. The hotel seems to have been recently refurbished and this mainfests itself in a unique blend of south Indian and Western charm.
We ate dinner at the multi-cuisine restaurant, which had a generous buffet spread. The same restaurant doubles up as a breakfast cafe in the mornings, and the spread with South Indian cusine including idilis and dosas was delicious. Due to a series of business meetings, we used the business centre and meeting rooms and found the staff to be very efficient and well-organised. Rooms were large, spacious and extremely comfortable. Oddly, the check-out process took unusually long, unlike checkin which was quick and efficient.
This would be my preferred choice to stay if I retrurned to Chennai.

We had a wonderful stay at the Taj Coromandel for just one night. We’d moved out of another hotel in Chennai, and the Taj proved a heavenly haven from the disappointing one in which we’d spent the previous two nights.

The foyer is five star and makes a sensational statement for the Taj brand. Our room was quiet and well designed, with modern, quality fittings (although the floor rug and gold covered throw on the bed were slightly stained). The lighting was excellent both at the desk and in the lounge area, and the bathroom was exactly what one expects from a hotel of this standard.

The public areas of the hotel are vast and splendid and beautifully decorated, with lots of comfortable, quiet seating spots. The swimming pool area is secluded and restful.

I’d definitely recommend this hotel to the discerning traveller. It’s a pretty good location for tourists, and tuk tuks are available outside the hotel. Chennai seems to be a series of villages now joined together and so it's hard to work out where tourists should ideally stay. By the time we arrived, we'd done most of the historic sites. One can walk to a nearby air conditioned shopping centre with quality Indian cottons and silks and stylish Indian clothes, and you’ll pass a Lavazza coffee shop as you stroll along the main street. (Turn right outside the hotel.) There's also an Indian restaurant in a laneway opposite the shopping centre which is recommended in TripAdvisor's restaurant guide.

Room Tip: Request a quiet room

Though this property is in the centre of business district the hotel services are best described as pathetic.

The rooms have now been renovated and have become even smaller. What they call Luxury is actually the base category. The staff are not well trained and lack the finess of working in a 5 star hotel.

I had earlier stated that i would like to make a reservation at the Golden Dragon - serving chinese food - and was told that wuld not be required as i was an in house guest. Imagine my surprise, when i reached down at 1930 hours for a quiet meal and was told that there were no tables. Finally, after making me wait for nearly 1/2 hour, they got me a table.

The food was good and decently priced.

However, when the bill was presented, i gave them my epicure card and they said that the points would be credited to my account. It has been a while and to date the account has not been credited.

While Checking out i called down at 0405 hours in the morning asking that my bill be made ready and that i would need a airport drop as well. When i came down at 0430 hours, the bill was still not ready. When the bill was finally prepared, i paid and got into the transport for my airport drop.

The driver refused to move as he had'nt received the go ahead. Suddenly, the Front office executive came running and asked for my credit card again as he had forgotten to add the airport drop on my bill. Another 10 minutes had gone by and by the time we left for the airport it was 0455 hours. We reached the airport at 0530 and was told that the airline had closed the counter. I had to buy a new ticket for my flight to Delhi.

But the business centre was really good. Get in touch with a person by the name of Mahadevan...Brilliant smile and will go out of your way to help.

Overall, a harrowing experience.

An average Taj- smooth checkin, slick service - all the things you normally expect. Relatively new compared to some of the Tajs e.g. Delhi. Good breakfast- I liked the food in Chennai actually. Decent facilities although I didn't get to use gym. Good location (for me anyway since it was near the places I needed to meet people at). Ran out of irons, so pressed my shirt for free. Nice enough hotel for a business trip. Not sure I would choose it for a holiday. Would probably stay there again when am back in May.

I have stayed in this hotel with a prior agreement of full day (early morning check in and late night check out due to my flight timing). Everthing was agreed on the phone, and the room was boooked. When i reach the hotel, first thing they said was they will bill me 2 nights although they agreed with me earlier the charge will for 1 night. I have argued for this and managed to keep it 1 night charge and reconfirmed the check in and check out time - guess what? i got call to my at 12:00 telling me to check out! Again, had a hot discussion and made checkout time clear along with the charge. At the time of actual check out - guess what? they give me a bill of 2 nights! arguments....discussions...and got the bill corrected for 1 night. i paid the revised bill and left, but when i reach airport i just looked at the bill and realize that they charged for 1 and half days charge! i just overlooked it because i was so frustrated with their repeated mistakes in booking details and billing! So guys, anything you agree with this hotel get it in an email so you have some proof, and of cours re-check your bill before paying!

I arrived in the night (4 a.m.) but the welcome was very warm: a lot of attention for any problem oe needs you have.
I really was made to feel like a King. A credible and very warm hospitality. I was made to feel at home away from home.
Even the security staff maintained a smile!
You can also find excellent food (italian restaurant, indian restaurant and Chinese restaurant mixed with indian style, absolutely the best).
