Owner description: This institution was established to resurrect the traditional dance forms of the country from adulteration by modern techniques, Kalakshetra has been around since 1936. Many subtle nuances existed in the making of this institution — a symbol of uprising against the British, commitment to theosophy and creation of a strong identity for Indian classical dance forms. The suburban institution offers events that are open to public. It also provides dance classes and a platform for research and studies about traditional Indian dances.

“Lovely morning”
Reviewed August 21, 2012

I am from Chennai, and now live overseas. I did not realize that you could do a self-guided tour of Kalakshetra. I took my kids (my daughter is learning classical dance) and it was a great experience to see the gurukul system out on display. Try to get there by 9:30 AM so you can be done by 11:30 when the tours close. Wish they had a guided tour or more information or a pamphlet: we pulled out my Iphone and read the info on the website before we started, which was actually great. Quiet, serene and keeping an important part of Indian heritage intact.

there is a school where the atmosphere is like a gurukul, would be difficult to see the same in any major city.

“Dance Festival at Kalakshetra”
Reviewed July 11, 2012

Kalakshetra is the best place for lovers of Indian Classical Dance and Music, especially during the winter (end of Dec - beginning of Jan) when it is time of Dance and Music Festival there. Don't miss dramas performed by the best Bharatanatyam dancers! Not only Bharatanatyam is available but Khatak, Hindustani and Carnatic music and much more!
The festival is not much advertised so you better go to Kalakshetra and ask about the programm and tickets. I always had floor tickets - the best places, very close to the stage (but only for those who have no problems sitting in half padmasana or similar).
Dance saris, tutorials and dramas on CDs can be purchased but again you will have to ask where)).
And of course, you can take dance classes at Kalakshetra!

“Classical and Lovely”
Reviewed July 7, 2012

This campus is one of the greats in India for Indian Classical Dance. Spend at least half a day here. You will want to go there when one of the art festivals are going on. December and January are the best times to be around. And go along with one of the locals in Chennai- who simply know a lot by virtue of their growing up in a Chennai Brahmin family.
