Valluvar Kottam Monument
Reviewed September 10, 2013

The chariot itself was impressive but the building that was built adjacent to it was in desperate need of some TLC. The sculptures inside that exhibit Thiruvalluvar’s famous 1330 verses were located in a dark, dirty building much like a multi-storey carpark. It was a shame to see it in such a condition. Furthermore, the site doesn’t have anything else there so a photo of the chariot or elephants not obscured by discarded fencing is the best you can hope for.

Visited this place recently to see an exhibition and made some purchase of handicrafts items. Valluvar kottam has a Car called in tamil as THER made out of stone is very special. This CAR or THER as called in tamil is very beautiful and well maintained and one can take photos if wants to.

I frequently visit the exhibitions that are organised by the Government bodies here at Valluvar Kottam. Last time around I happened to go around it and found it stinking. I always wonder how a monument for a great Tamil poet (Thiruvalluvar) in the heart of the city could be maintained this badly. There is no proper guidance for any tourists. Only the locals (as they know that there are 1330 couplets are there) can manage to get around and understand the place. Hardly any tourist get to know the way to reach the chariot on the terrace. This serves as a resting place for anti-social elements during the day. I really feel sorry for this horror-state of a potential tourist destination.

Valluvar kottam is a monument built in remembrance of the poet-saint Tiruvalluvar. It is beautiful, attractive and well worth a visit.

Constant offerings of exhibition and ample parking make this government extravaganza worth a visit. It is easy to access and give cool rest for a hot visitor. No major traditional value, yet offers one of beauty in rock works in Tiruvalluvar chariot. Ride the elephants when you are there and fun walking around.
