“A Date to Remember”

We went to ITC Grand as we had heard a lot about the hotel, the food and most important the ambiance. I have to admit that this hotel does offers you a "Grand" experience. weather its at the time you enter, your stay time or at the restaurants.
Indeed, this may be a bit high on the pocket but it offers a priceless experience.

The open spaces, light coloured marble, mirrors and chandeliers conveyed a sense of grandeur that was both impressive and slightly intimidating at the same time.
Though there are only around 8 floors, the room numbers are counted first by their wing then their floor, then their number. For example, if you were in the 10th room of the 3rd floor of the 2nd wing, your room number would be 2310. A bit confusing at the start.
The lobbies and lounges are nicely furnished and are great places to hang out and kill time. There were a couple of chairs that I would’ve loved to have in my own house, but the cushions were a bit firmer than I normally like.
There was a constant stream of relaxing music in the common spaces and I particularly appreciated the music at the Madras Pavilion during breakfast for providing a gentle start to the day. That said, during a buffet dinner at the same spot one night there was a Sade track on repeat, which we mentioned to one of the waiters.
The staff appeared to work hard at keeping the mosquito population under control, but I would recommend adding bug spray to your morning routine. The shoe polisher at the ground floor cloak rooms seemed to be where the little critters hung out in the morning.
The room itself (on the 5th floor of the 2nd wing) was a nice space. I had no trouble with noise from the street or neighbours (though the hotel was fairly quiet for most of the stay). One of the reasons for the rooms being so quiet were the heavy doors. Make sure to close them properly when you go through, as they sometimes don’t latch closed.
The wifi service was good, though I’m not sure how it performed during the day as I was at work. The universal plugs at the writing desk was an appreciated touch, as I had forgotten to bring my own. The multitude of media ports that were also here could have been very useful but I only tested the USB port, which didn’t work for me.
The iPad control centre for the room (from which you can adjust the lights, climate control, TV, and order in room dining) was a nice touch, though this could be further improved if the television stations were mapped correctly, not a deal breaker though. Also, it had some good information about the hotel and the area, but lacked an easy to find floor plan (to find the restaurants, gyms etc) of the hotel.
Climate control felt limited as the temperature did not feel like it could go above 22 degrees. For the most of my stay I had adjusted the temperature to its maximum setting (28deg) with low to medium fan speed. However, I noticed a preference for arctic temperatures everywhere, the taxis to the offices at work.
Another quirk in the room was the bath taps. They are marked “H” and “C”, but the hot water, came from the “C” tap. A colleague confirmed that this was also the case in their room.
The room turn down service was not always consistent in terms of how and what they replaced; often the coffee and shampoo were not replaced if even one of the allocated total per room (eg: 2 satchels allocated but one used) remained.
The room service was efficient and polite and the food did not disappoint.
We the restaurants in the hotel, specifically the Royal Vega, Ottimo Cucina Italiana, The Cheroot Malt and Cigar Lounge and of course the Madras Pavilion.
Breakfast at the Madras Pavilion offered the usual options from western to Indian cuisine. I stuck to the western options during the week but treated myself to the Indian food on the weekend and was not disappointed.
At the Royal Vega, we accepted the offer of a tour of the space and explanation of the cuisine. What was already quite an impressive space went up a few notches and our original plan for a “couple of curries for dinner” turned into a trip down the local history and culture. If I am honest, it was slightly intimidating, but educational at the same time.
The drinking situation was probably the biggest surprise for a western traveller. The Indian government is cracking down on the social problems from drinking and as such there are extra expenses and restrictions attached. For example, Republic Day (26th of Jan) was a dry day and no alcohol was served anywhere in the hotel – so I had a ‘mocktail’ to celebrate Australia Day which is also the 26th of January. Imported spirits (whiskeys and gins etc) also have hefty price tags attached.
The Hotel isn’t placed very well for local dining. We found a nice biryani place about 10 minutes by foot but getting there in local traffic wasn’t the easiest thing to do. The concierge mentioned a number of places that were “20 minutes by car” but for work reasons decided to stay in the hotel.
The staff at the ITC added a warm touch that went towards making the stay enjoyable. They were friendly, very quick to help and always greeted you with a smile.
I would request that the ladies on the telephone system (for room service, laundry etc) would speak a bit slower as they were sometimes hard to understand. Though I didn’t encounter this, a couple of my colleagues were called a number of times to see if they were ok when they had selected the Do Not Disturb option on the iPad control centre. Not quite what you expect when you don’t want to be disturbed.
The gym was clean, well equipped and well staffed. It had a good selection of connected cardio machines (bikes, ellipticals and treadmills) on which you could watch media (your own or on the network) or run exercise routines as well as free weights and cable machines. Though some might miss the lack of a rowing machine or chin up bar the staff more than make up by offering useful alternatives and, personally, in a couple of cases keeping an eye on the guests and adjusting the equipment to get best/ safest use. I didn’t use the pool so will refrain from comment.
On the whole, I recommend the ITC as a place to stay when visiting Chennai.

I booked this hotel mistakenly as thinking of Chola Sherator, i stayed long back, as soon as i reached the hotel i was pleasantly realised my mistake.. after traveling across the world and staying in countless number of hotels i wasn't expecting this luxury in Chennai but i was surely beaten on that...its the mix of best technology, service and scale of this property that makes this the best..without doubt one of the top two i have ever stayed..ipad experience was great!!!

The first thing about ITC Grand Chola is that it is massive and looks and feels luxurious. It’s huge and yes you feel really good once you enter this beautiful piece of architecture.....
The rooms are great especially the ITC one or towers category,
A lot of options for the restaurants, a good gym. It’s a great feeling to stay here but the service is pathetic.......
Have stayed here at least 2 times in last 1 month and the biggest disappointment is that with each successive visit, the service and quality has gone down, But that’s been the trend with ITC , they somehow manage to get the service down for the in house guests.... Have been a loyal customer with ITC for last 6 years and often feel they have lost the customer focus they had earlier...

It’s a good experience to come and stay here for some time..... And feel the responsible luxury with irresponsible service and attitude

Room Tip: Never stay in the apartment rooms....... They dont care .....especially the House keeping staff...

Pan asia is by far the best asian restaurant in the city. been there trice in the last 3 months. Great food and service. The restaurant offers different seating. My favorite is the place next to the bar. The person serving us was exceptionally good and quite calm and composed (Tarez).
Top Notch..keep it up!!!
