Owner description: Originally started with a more serious conservation point of view, Crocodile Bank is now the weekend spot for a fascinating day of herpetology. For the kids, it’s a special treat to see large crocs spend the day languorously by the water. The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology also allows adults to volunteer and gain hands-on experience in the field.

“Visitor friendly, plenty of volunteers around”
Reviewed February 21, 2014

The place is situated on the East Coast Road, just short of Mahabalipuram and takes about an hour from Chennai if traffic is light. There is parking (paid) outside the venue. The entry fee is reasonable. The place is not very large and can be covered on foot without getting exhausted. There are information boards everywhere and we found young volunteers (mostly college students) eager to answer questions. There are hundreds of crocodiles of various types and also a special enclosure for snakes where venom-extraction is demonstrated. An unexpected bonus was the large number of birds nesting on the trees above.
A small canteen provides snacks and good quality tea and coffee.
A good place for children and adults alike.
The only minus factor was the quality of the toilets.

“Pretty amazing place given the location. Kids & adults alike.”
Reviewed February 15, 2014

Would never have thought to stop & visit but was on a long business trip and my driver suggested we give it a shot.
It's a huge place with literally dozens of different alligators and crocodiles (honestly some look fairly alike to me).
Not too many visitors so you have that odd feeling you're almost more in nature than a zoo.
Also got to hold a small one, maybe two feet, and take pictures.

Would recommend for 2-3 hours, kids or not.

“Poorly maintained”
Reviewed February 11, 2014

The Crocodile Bank Trust as it is officially known, for the kind of activities it is involved in, is also a Crocodile Park for the visitors. Crocodiles from many parts of the world are on display and some of the enclosures present an amazing sight with about a hundred crocodiles in a cluster. They come in all sizes and species and some fully grown ones are also seen basking in the sun. The entire park emanates a peculiar stench but it is tolerable and one gets used to it. The place is certainly not well maintained. Even if one was to accept the authorities assertion that the crocodiles are kept in their natural habitat, meaning green murky waters then what explanation they have for the poorly maintained visitors areas. They should work on aesthetics as well as improve the infrastructure from the tourist perspective to make the park more attractive.

“Crocodile park - worth a visit”
Reviewed February 7, 2014

Visited this park in the first week of February. This is a very good place to see and learn about many kinds of crocodiles and some kinds of snakes. Few types of tortoises are also sheltered here. All reptiles are being kept in good, large open enclosures resembling almost their natural habitats. The entrance fee is just 30 Rs. per person and car parking fee is 20 Rs. although you are parking along the side of the main road. But its ok since its a source of an additional income for the local panchayath. There is another small section inside with an entry fee of 10 Rs. where different venomous snakes are kept and where they demonstrate how the venom is extracted for medical and research purposes. A small snackbar , souvenir shop and toilet are provided inside. The total park can be covered in one and half to two hours.

“Amazing collection of crocodile”
Reviewed February 6, 2014

This place is in the ECR on the way to pondicherry very near to Mahabalipuram. there is a entry fee and u can learn a lot about these species, the way these crocodiles are maintained is worth a praise, the crocodiles are fed regularly so as to keep them calm. apart from the crocs u can also see some endangered turtles, and also the migratory birds, overall a very nicely maintained place worth a visit.
