Owner description: Originally started with a more serious conservation point of view, Crocodile Bank is now the weekend spot for a fascinating day of herpetology. For the kids, it’s a special treat to see large crocs spend the day languorously by the water. The Madras Crocodile Bank Trust and Centre for Herpetology also allows adults to volunteer and gain hands-on experience in the field.

“Lazy crocs”
Reviewed February 24, 2013

All kinds of crocs and man how lazy they were...the area is huge and hence the crocodiles seem to be liking it...ofcourse the banks which had over 400 crocs in one place were a bit smelly but what else can be expected.
A good 1 hour can be spent here.

“A perfect spot for your weekend day trip with kids”
Reviewed February 10, 2013

Well maintained park which houses a huge number of crocodiles.. the place also has a snake park with live demonstration by local tribal men on venom extraction.. the crocodiles are a delight to watch, housed in natural surroundings, the walk is lined with trees which shield you from the hot Chennai heat..
while food is not allowed inside, you might have to stop by nearby resorts / eateries for lunch as there are no food courts in the park..
the volunteers give you good details and share their exciting experiences if questioned..

“Amazing place”
Reviewed February 5, 2013

Madras Crocodile Bank Trust Centre for Herpetology is located at a distance of about 45 KM from Chennai and it is on the way to Mamallapuram on the East Coast Road. This is one of the biggest reptile zoos in the world and one of the oldest Non governmental organizations in Asia. It houses about 2,500 anilams (maily crocs) of about 25 species. The animals are kept in natural habitats and the place is well maintained. To add to the attraction, they have displayed green anacondas in their zoo bang at the entrance. One male and one female measuring little more than 6 feet (1 year old and can grow to about 22 feet). They also conduct guided tours for children and some camps for them during holidays.

Inside the campus, there is also a snake park run by "Irulas" (People whose primary occupation is catching snakes). They desplay only venomous snakes (cobra, kraits, russel viper etc) and also do a wonderful demonstration. Extraction of venom is also shown live.

Best time to visit the zoo is on Sunday between 1500-1700 hrs when they feed the animals. Entry fee for the Croc Bank is Rs.10 for adults and if you have a video camera you may need t pay Rs.100/-.

They do not allow any plastic items (other than water bottles)

“Special Area”
Reviewed February 4, 2013

Though we can't get much of the natural wilderness in Chennai and surrounding area, this one is special. The number of crocodiles are huge. The animal lovers will have a great time but the normal persons will get bored with 30-40 min. If you have lot leisure time, have a visit.
