I've visited Westminster perhaps 15 times over the past 6-7 years. My most recent visit was about two months ago, with my wife and another couple.
Long years ago - say 1993 - this place had the edge over the few such other bars in town, because it had a nice secluded feel to it. But it unravelled, because when I made my reacquaintance with Westminster about seven years ago, it seemed like mobs from the lumpen element had made the place their own.
After that, I only went when necessary - like with a hotel guest. All along, the spirits as well as bar snacks were quite acceptable; it was the crowd which had become most avoidable.
About two months ago, I revisited as one of a party of four, as stated earlier. We had time to kill before our dinner reservation, and out of an absence of choice we headed to Westminster. A pleasant surprise awaited : probably because management had abandoned its "cheap money" policy of the past, which was attracting jumped-up adults, the atmosphere now was decidedly agreeble. The airconditioning of the W'minster was wonderfully bracing - always a strong point with it, even in the doldrum days of the past. Service, alcohol, short-eats : all fine.
As recompense for the improved air, the bill alas also packed a healthy punch. But to be fair, W'minster is not alone in Chennai in this. A whole lot of others are looking for wipe-out it seems, the way prices for an evening out at a five-star hotel are skyrocketing.
