I have stayed at this hotel twice. Both times the staff have been helpful and the Generals daughter is lovely. She has an adorable cat who became our room companion- an added bonus!! The rooms are clean and spacious and location is quiet yet central.

Even though it's next to a big road it's a calming place not far away from the main sights in Jaipur. Really close to Anokhi, my favorite shop. Management truly helpful, generous and service minded. Among the most service minded I've come across in India.
Staff in restaurant kind and sweet but some lack of english confuses things. But adorable boy in reception and his smile make up for everything!

The ayurvedic massage place they sent us to was good quality place and the taxi driver they arranged was superb, the journey to Udaipur was relaxing thanks to him.

The generals home is definitely a good place oreconverted to a hotel.Spacious and comfortable rooms in a villa.Every room has a unique look and there's a nice garden in front of the house. The stuff is super friendly and attentive.

As a current longterm guest of the Generals Retreat , I totally agree with all the positive comments made about this wonderful "home away from home ".
However , I cannot agree with Ritzengupta's recent negative comments about adaptability to guests ......
It has been my experience that all staff ,management & the owners "bend over backwards" to accommodate guests' needs .
Asking for microwaves or food heaters very late at night is not normal hotel ,budget hotel or guest house practice . By far & away ,the vast majority of guests implicitly understand that there are limitations to kitchen service ,unless you stay in a top level 5 star luxury hotel ,which can offer room service meals (for which you pay a premium !!).
It is clearly written on the back of each room door when the hours of dining are & this information makes it quite clear that 10 pm is closing time .
All in all ,my experience is overwhelmingly satisfying.

The Generals Retreat is a lovely, aesthetically designed guest house in the heart of Jaipur. Lovely warm staff, good food, bright airy rooms, green terrace- the positives are huge. Their only drawback- adaptability to guests. We were a group of friends and wanted to eat dinner late. While we did not expect the staff to wait up for us, we asked for access to a microwave or a hot plate to warm our food at night and both nights we were there, this was refused. We were also told categorically both nights to eat dinner out since the propreitors of the place were having a party. This statement, which was made by the guesthouse manager, was of course denied by the owner completely the 2nd evening and we were given dinner later in the evening. The 2 attending staff made up for all the misunderstandings the entire time we were there and were very courteous, polite and extremely helpful, even offering to warm our food for us late at night. The food is good, a bit steep in terms of prices but hot and fresh. The place is lovely in terms of decor and exudes warmth. Overall a good stay but if I had a choice, I would not stay there again.

Management response:Responded October 30, 2012

Dear Mr. Sengupta,

At the outset we would like to thank you for choosing to stay at The Generals Retreat and also for your favourable feedback with regard to our service, food and rooms.

We regret that you did not have a pleasant stay with us. Ours is a small Homestay, run by the family members themselves. Much as we would like to it is not possible for us to keep our kitchen open beyond 10 pm. Also we think there was a misunderstanding, we were not having a party that night and all the guests staying with us ate dinner that night by 10pm. We do at times try to accomodate the needs of our guests. However, as it is our peak season it is difficult for us to serve dinner after 12 midnight. It is not a practice in Homestays or even high end Hotels to provide microwaves to guests and thus as such it is something that we could not do.

Thank you once again for staying with us.

Regards,
The Generals Retreat
