“What a beautiful experience.”

Dera Amer Elephant Safari
Reviewed December 8, 2012 via mobile

I have never been up close to an elephant before and just adored my time with Lashmi. The surroundings are quiet and peaceful and it felt like such a priviledge to be able to wash her and care for her. Painting her trunk was great fun and she seems to enjoy the interaction and attention. The ride round on her was fun, especially when I was given a beer half way round. Lunch was good andvI was able to give the lovely Lashmi final cuddles before I left. It was a never to be forgotten experiance.

For some reason anything to do with elephants in Jaipur seems to attract a huge premium over any other local attractions. Elephantastic is the other major local attraction involving Elephants and seems to get highly rated despite charging the best part of a $100 per head. Dera Amer was a high quality venue with well kept animals; courteous service and charged a similar amount but at least you got a buffet lunch included in the price. The only problem was that the food was the most bland I have ever tasted in India - presumably to cater for delicate western pallets. But to claim that this was regional cuisine is well wide of the mark - no self respecting Indian would eat it. The Elephant ride lasts about an hour and you go through some attractive terrain. We would loved to have seen an Elephant polo match the pitch was all laid out ready - but it was not scheduled for that day. A pleasant way to spend a couple of hours but not great value for money.

Glad to know that the guest liked the facilities and the way we keep our elephants, thank you very much.
Our costing is based upon providing a level of exclusive and luxury time with the elephants and appropriate amount of exercise as well as amount of healthy human interaction for the elephants in relation to the expenditures we incur while taking care of our elephants and providing you a comfortable and luxurious layout.
We regret that the guest was not satisfied with the food-though we do not state anywhere that we provide regional cuisine if ever requested we are confident and will serve the best, the food at the camp is farm fresh home made Indian food.
99% of our clientale is Western hence we do keep very low on the chillies but not a single spice, herb, masala associated with Indian Cuisine is missed out, most of our guests are accompanied by Indian escorts and guides whom we feed as well, they have absolutely loved the food and relish their meals at the camp.Sometimes we make the mistake of judging food without chillies as Non Indian even though it has all the right ingredients excepting the chillies. For the guests who prefer chillies in their food we serve a garlic and red chilly chutney in the buffet.

Our travel agent recommended Dera Amer Elephant Safari to my husband and I, and to be perfectly honest, we were a bit skeptical at first. We were afraid it might be a bit touristy but it definitely was not. Much to our surprise our travel agent had arranged a private visit for us, so we had a truly wonderful, wonderful experience.

Dera Amer is located about 40 minutes via car outside of Jaipur. The property is beautiful. Its so quite, relaxing, peaceful and lovely that you forget that you're just a short drive from all the hustle and bustle of Jaipur. We met the owner of the property and told him that he should really consider opening up a few small rooms on the land. It would be such a perfect spot for a romantic getaway for a couple of nights.

When we arrived we were greeted by our elephant and we fed him some bananas and got to know him for a bit before we hopped on for the ride. Our ride was an hour long and about half way through the ride another staff member met us and offered us beverages - a great treat! The ride was a lot of fun. We saw more of the beautiful land, some local farmers and herders, birds, etc. Our elephant stopped for a few tree snacks along the way and our elephant trainer was so sweet about taking lots of photos for us.

After the ride we enjoyed drinks and appetizers and watched the sunset while a private dinner was prepared for us. The dining area is like a large covered patio so you have great views all around. The furniture is pretty and very comfortable. Dinner was great and of course we ate way too much! (as a random side note - Dera Amer has some of the nicest restrooms you'll find in India outside of your hotel - we were so surprised!)

This was such a fun escape from the city. I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Jaipur. Our private ride and dinner was perfect for a couple looking for a romantic evening and while we did not bath/paint the elephants I can only imagine how much fun that would be for children. And, you can alway arrange to play or watch elephant polo! A polo match was ending we we arrived.

We loved our visit to Dera Amer - was definitely one of the highlights of our trip!

We had went for the elephant ride at Amber Fort in Jaipur before going to Dera.

Felt that Dera is really good and we really enjoyed the elephant trekking which is an unforgettable experience for us.

We were glad we had went for it though we find the 1hr elephant trekking (include feeding & painting the elephant) and dinner (buffet-style), a little pricey.

Would suggest to go for just the elephant trekking & dine elsewhere instead.
