“Great Mid-Range Hotel”
Reviewed January 31, 2013

Just got back from a fabulous trip to India. We stayed two nights in Jaipur at the Hotel Madhuban. It was a great value, clean, and comfortable. The food in the restaurant was also very good and it was nice to not have to go out to eat. Our pre-arranged car and driver did not show up in the morning and the hotel was quick to arrange a taxi for us for the day to see the sights. We also needed a car and driver to take us to Agra the following day and Sharif Khan from Rajasthan Royal Tours came to our rescue. He made our road trip to Agra very enjoyable and arranged tour guides for us at Fatehpur Sikri as well as the Taj Mahal. He even bought us chai early in the morning when we set out early to photograph at sunrise. I would highly recommend his touring services when in Jaipur as well as a stay at Hotel Madhuban.

Room Tip: Hotel is in a quiet neighborhood so street noise is not a problem, but our room was up three flights...

This hotel is gorgeous, well maintained and extremely comfortable. The hotel is in a quieter part of Jaipur away from the hustle and bustle. The hotel management was extremely helpful and nice. It's a great deal for the price, really comfortable beds, great wi-fi, amazing hot showers and the power did not go out once! Perfection!

We stayed at Madhuban for 3 nights and were very disappointed, given its top choice rating in the Lonely Planet. The location is inconvenient: about a 20 minute auto rickshaw ride to the old city and the sites there, with nothing interesting around for miles. The onsite restuarant was pricey and the food was probably the worst we had in India. The breakfast buffet was reasonably priced, but the food very average (with no Indian breakfast items). The manager at the front desk was not particularly friendly and very inexperienced in travel planning. We requested a taxi to take us to the block printing village of Sanager and he arranged a pricey trip with a driver that knew very little about the area and wound up wasting a half day for us.
The rest of hotel staff was very nice and polite, but given an air of colonial-era like servants by the hotel, making it almost uncomfortable to request things.
The hotel did have free WiFi, but guests must request a password that is only valid for 2 hours. This wound up making a convenient service very annoying, having to keep requesting multiple passwords or have an internet session expire while you're in the middle of doing something. If you're going to offer guests Internet access, then why not just do it with no strings attached?
To be fair, Jaipur was overall an annoying, unfriendly, hassle-filled, tourist trap mega city, and that put a damper on our entire stay there. Madhuban unfortunately didn't do much to redeem our idea of the city. It's not a terrible place, but just very overrated.

Our stay at Madhuban was was very good. I wasn’t too sure about it at first. The staff came off as a little stand-offish initially. They warmed up though. I think in the end, they might have been a bit shy or told to keep their distance from the guests. For being a small hotel, they seemed to provide very good service and were very helpful. They really want to please. I agree with a previous reviewer.....loose the silly uniforms with pillbox hats. How about a nice polo shirt and khaki pants? Our room was comfortable and very clean - very old fashioned. Plenty of hot water for the shower. The garden was a welcome retreat. Breakfast was acceptable. We ate dinner in the little restaurant one night. It was okay but pricey for what you got. To the owners: a little traditional music playing softly in the restaurant would go a long way to warm the place up and please leave instructions for the room safe in the room. A little better orientation to the property at arrival would another welcome improvement.

The Madhuban Hotel is located in a quiet street of the main road into Jaipur, the quiet lawns garden is an ideal spot to unwind after the hustle and bustle of the city.

We stayed for 3 nights in mid December in the Royal Suite which was a good choice, the suite was spacious beautifully laid out with 4 poster bed, everything in the colonial style.

Our Hosts Mr and Mrs Dicky Singh and there staff were great, making us feel very welcome, and the hotel portrayed a very relaxed atmosphere.

The Madhuban Hotel is in an ideal location for exploring Jaipur, and great value.

Thanks to Alastair Sawday's "Special Place in India" which enabled use to find the Madhuban Hotel a great find.

Room Tip: The Royal Suite is the best room, well worth the extra cost.

Just stayed for three nights with a friend. The hotel has a very colonial feel that provides one with a sense of British India - and as a result the rooms are quasi decadent, very clean, there is a good safe, nice hot water etc - but unfortunately what comes staying in British India is uncommunicative staff in military style uniforms, a feeling of sadness with a hint of slave mentality; either through a lack of good English skills or a desire to communicate with you like a person on equal terms. We found this to be the worst part of staying here - Having said that the staff were definitely all trying to be nice and service or needs but in a way that made us feel frustrated because it was too hard to overlook the 'us and them' mentality. We had just come from hotel Kamal in Agra where the staff made you feel very welcome, showed us how to dance Bollywood and talked to us about India, life, loves and gave us really great tips, ideas and impressions of where to go and what to do. I guess at the end of the day, if you segregation from staff then this place is perfect - we had just wished for a bit more harmonious equality between staff and guests. Again, the staff were nice in their own way. One other thing is the location which is great if you want to be away from the hustle of town but not ideal if you want to soak up the atmosphere of the city life as it is about 2km out of town - and in traffic will take you at least 20 min to get in or out. Last things - did appreciate the complimentary supply of soap, shampoo etc - and the buffet breakfast for 190rupees capped - is really worth it because you can order what you want and there are plenty of pancakes and endless cups of great coffee to be had.

Room Tip: The more expensive rooms are quite grand and probably worth the extra money - esp if you like space...

We wanted a quiet hotel and more than just a place to sleep. Because we found India very hectic we wanted a place where we could also relax in the afternoon, It ticked those boxes. The lawn is great to hang out and in the afternoon tea is provided. For us as backpackers it was pricey but it is defenitely value for money. Our deluxe room was great. After two nights we had to shift to a suite room, we didn't think it was worth the money. It had private seating in front of the room and authentic old furniture but it was noiserer and the bathroom in the deluxe room was more modern. There was so much staff, we don't how they keep themselves busy all day! They are very polite and formal, which makes the atmosphere very formal. All in all a great hotel, we would stay here again.
