“Lovely place with great service”
Reviewed November 24, 2012

We very much enjoyed our stay at Madhuban Hotel, which is a posh and quiet haven away from the chaos of Jaipur. The room was nicely decorated, the bathroom was clean (and even came with accessories like shampoo and soap, which we have found to be rare among midrange places in India) and the hotel itself was beautiful. There were many sunny spots to relax with a book, including the outdoor lounges immediately outside our hotel room door and the lovely garden, which is also where they serve breakfast. It was also interesting to see the historic pictures in the lounge, which included one of Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh during what I assumed to be a visit to the place and/or a meeting with someone related to the hotel owners. The Internet is a bit slow, but when the computer suddenly shut down during one of my paid hours, the staff person I asked for help happily gave me a free 30 minutes to make up for lost time. The food is pretty good too.
The hotel is a little ways away from the Old City and the main restaurants on M.I. road, but it costs only about 70 rupees to get there. Don't make the same mistake we did and try to walk! It is a lot further than it looks on a map and the traffic (especially around the circles) is insane. Save your walking for once you get inside the Old City.

The Madhuban is the top recommendation at Lonely Planet, but we found it is only partly worth that ranking. The garden is beautiful and the breakfast buffet outstanding for Indian standards. Our room, however, was dark even with the lights switched on. Most annoying we found that most of the staff is hunting for tips. When you enter from shopping keep your bags, otherwise one will grab them, run the 20 meters for your room and demand a tip then. As Madhuban is a bit away from the centre taxis and riskshaws charge outrages prices and we had the impression this is partly because everybody has to have his share. Definitely not acceptable for a hotel at this price range in such a city: even at the reception you will find broken English at best. We are not likely to visit again.

They picked us up for free from the train station, the rooms were clean, the sheets were fresh, and the on-site restaurant is wonderful.

The staff was exceedingly friendly and helpful. We had dinner in the garden one evening and the food prepared was impressive.

We checked out the nice pool but didn't swim. They had air conditioning in our room which was nice, but it shuts off in the middle of the night for a couple of hours. I think they want you to open the windows and sleep in the fresh air since rooms are on the 2nd and 3rd levels.

They also have Internet in 1 hour increments for a small price.

If you are staying in Jaipur, I would highly recommend Madhuban.

One thing stands out when I think back to our stay at Madhuban and that's big smiles. The staff were very friendly and attentive. The location is great, off the busy main street allowing a peaceful nights sleep after a hot day.

Stayed for one night only, attracted by the LP review and the convenient location, quite close to the railway station (had to take a 5.00 am train).
Arrived early in the morning, we were given a room to refresh ourselves, before we were offered to move to another one. Both rooms were fine, at a very fair rate. We spent all the day visiting Jaipur, had no time to enjoy the small, though looking like relaxing, swimming pool. Staff is kind, someone came at 4.40 am to take our back-pack downstairs. Good continental breakfast with omelettes, toasts, jams, honey, fruit, coffee/teas, juices, corn-flakes.
Hope to try it again for a few more days.
If you arrive early in the morning, they may be send Muhamed "Mo" and his auto-rickshaw to pick you up from the railway station. "Mo" is an excellent, prudent driver, a good guide, easy going and (what is rare), absolutely a no pushy-kind of guy. He will offer to take you to a day city tour for a very reasonable cost. You will get rid of hawkers drivers, not to bargain for each ride and have him for all the day long. We did it and we went to our planned tour from 9,30 am to 9 pm, from the Pink City to Amber Fort, from Gathal/Monkey Palace, to Tiger Fort.
Ask for him at the reception, if you want to have an easy way to go around in Jaipur. Check his guest-book (!) for reviews.
