“For sure best hotel in Jaipur”
Reviewed May 16, 2008

Strongly recommend

The Hotel Umaid Bhawan is absolutely an adorable hoteli in Jaipur. If you check their pictures it is hard to understand that the hotel is even more beautiful alive. It is from a fairtytail.

Staff is very friendly, all facilities are functioning. The restaurant at rooftop is good. I strongly recommend for everyone. Stayed there in Aprli - May several nights 2008.

The hotel has a lot a character. The rooms are large and the décor is interesting! Staff are very helpful and the roof top restaurant is a good place to eat. Free pick up from the train station. !00 % recommended.

First the positives- although we arrived early morning at 0500hrs the room was ready for us although they had not committed to keeping the room in our email correspondence. The hotel is not in city centre and is in a quiet residential area. The downside is that you have to pay 40-50Rs by auto if you want to have a decent meal outside or to reach any tourist attraction. There are a couple of autos and taxis stationed outside the hotel - so transport in itself is not a problem. The staff is helpful - they arranged late night pick up to airport which arrived on time. The suggestions they gave on best restaurants for eating out were good.

The negatives- The room we used was a standard room with an additional cot which made moving within the room extremely difficult. They charged full breakfast for the extra person but gracefully removed the charges when it was pointed out that it was assumed that the additonal charge of 500Rs covers the breakfast. Although breakfast is included in the room charge, they charge extra for eggs!

The roof top restaurant is OK for one night dinner. The ambience they have tried to achieve is of a heritage hotel . They have partially succeeded -however housekeeping could be better.

If you want a quiet place with a pool at a a good price this is it. But do check around- you might get better deals at the same price.

  • Liked — Location and the pool
  • Disliked — The hidden charges- especially extra charge for eggs for breakfastg

Looking forward to staying here after seeing the website and the reviews. Collected at the train station as part of the price, and given a nice room on the second floor. But within half an hour of being in the room the banging started and the walls were shaking! We noticed the large building site next door when we arrived, but didn't think about how it would affect our stay.
We asked to move rooms to a quieter side of the hotel, but they only had one smaller, less attractive room on the next floor up, which still had its window looking out on to the building site. But at least this one didn't shake with the banging.
That night we went to the Hotel Shaphura for a drink at its restaurant and walked past the Umaid Mahal on the way back. We decided to see if we could change hotels, since they are owned by the same people, and they phoned the manager for us and said a room was available the next day. So we checked out in the morning and moved hotels.
The Umaid Bhawan would have been our prefered hotel, as the rooftop restaurant was nicer, it had a pool, the rooms were better looking, and it had balconies - but we couldn't stand the banging that started at 7:30 in the morning.

  • Liked — The building
  • Disliked — Noisy building site next door

Umaid Bhawan is a beautiful hotel. It's got a great pool, balconies and outdoor seating areas. The restaurant is on the roof and is perfect for catching a cool breeze. Highly recommend eating the Indian breakfast and a Thali for dinner there. They don't serve/sell beer/alcohol, but they will allow you to BYO and will put in the fridge for you. The service is outstanding. There are 2 computers with internet and a phone box to make calls home from. It's not in the dead centre of Jaipur, but most visitors to the 'golden triangle' of india will have a hired car and driver so its very accessible. We traveled on a fairly low budget and this was the most expensive hotel we stayed in, but thought it was extremely good value for money.

We stayed at this hotel about 3 years ago and although the place had a lot of character (with lots of antiques and paintings) and rooms fairly clean, comfortable and well-decorated, the bathrooms were in dire need of completion or updating - it seemed that work in our bathroom had been left half-way. We didnt particularly think that the staff or managers were very attentive or bothered about going that extra mile. Food was ok - nothing out of the ordinary - we enjoyed breakfast in the sunny restaurant balcony but sadly our views comprised a couple of building sites and other havelis in the area.

The location of the haveli seemed slightly odd but wasnt of much concern given the rates we were paying and that we had a car.

OK overall - will probably try somewhere else next time.

We arrived on a night train from Jaisalmer and had booked a pick-up. No one turned up and since it was so early in the morning there was no one that really spoke English answering the hotel phone. Was all very frustrating and in the end got a rickshaw, which i wasn't too happy about given it was cold and dark. When we arrived our room wasn't ready (not that I was really expecting it to be at that time). We sat just past the reception and were totally ignored. It might of been nice to offer us some tea. We eventually got our room which was ok, silly ornate frames meant you couldn't see the TV from the bed. A good size and a heater to help warm us up. There were some works going on next door so it was pretty noisy. Nice hot shower. The restaurant on the top was quite nice and we ate breakfast and dinner there twice. In retrospect I wished we'd gone to Madhuban.

  • Liked — The restaurant terrace
  • Disliked — our 'non pick-up' from the station
