It is not the first time I have mean there but it still amazes me. The sun dials and zodiac signs. Next to the city Palace, it is best done with a Jaipur guide who can explain how it all works. Well worth a visit especially if you like how things work and science

Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh (Jai Singh II) was a busy man indeed. An hour is well spent at this place. By the way, take a Composite Entry Ticket here for Rps 300 to include the nearby Hawamahal or Palace of winds and also includes far away Amber Fort plus the excellent Albert Hall museum stuffed with interesting items.

When the rest of the world did not even know that Earth revolves around the Sun, Indian Astronomy was way ahead. Unfortunately, post Colonial rule, Indians lost confidence in their traditional knowledge. Not only that, today Indians look down upon anything traditional Indian..till someone from the west patents it!
Jantar Mantar is an interesting piece of Indian science. It is amazing to see instruments that are so accurate.

preferably with the same guide. Quick half-hour jaunt around better and better equipment, culminating in the largest sundial. Things could be fairly accurate in the days before atomic clocks

A visit to the Pink City of Rajasthan should include a visit to the Jantar Mantar ('House of Instruments') along with a visit to the palace. This is the largest and best preserved of the five astronomical observatories built by Maharaja Jai Singh II in the early 18th century, inspired by the one in Samarkand. It consists of 14 huge stone instruments, and I do mean 'huge': the Samrat Yantra is 70 feet high and 114 feet across (hence, 'sun dial' doesn't quite capture it). They are interesting as historic scientific instruments, though, in this role it seems that size isn't everything: built this large in an attempt to increase accuracy, the Maharaja overlooked the fact that increased size meant more shade diffraction and therefore larger penumbra, potentially decreasing the accuracy of the devices.

If you are not particularly keen on astronomy or the history of science, it is still worth a visit. The large sculptural forms of the instruments are beautiful aesthetic objects and are attractively sited in the park next to the palace. My favourite thing about them, however, is the pictures of the zodiac signs placed on each of 12 devices, to aide with recognising which astrological sign each of them is for. These are recognisable but very Indian in design and beautiful objects in their own right. (I've included a few examples.)
